Did the bird guy survive?

The guy who's feeding the birds, and then gets lifted up over the lava by them, he seems like the only one to notice the lava before it gets to him. Do the birds drop him into the lava as he prays, terrified, to an uncaring god? Or does he make it to the water safely, only to swim back after the lava has cooled, alone in the vast ocean, atop a lifeless wasteland of ash made up of the ruins of his home and the charred corpses of everyone he has ever known?

He just disappeared for me before the camera locked and I could no longer control the character.

Funny thing is you can answer this yourself because the lava doesn't even kill you. You can sit there and walk around the island and see how each person reacts to the lava from those who notice it and run away, to the point where they're burning alive.
