When you look at it that way, the way the developers originally intended you see it in a different light. I guess the only problem for me (I still only have about 3 hours on it) is that I'm just one of the many, many gamers who really don't need to kill 15-20 minutes, more like 5 minutes or a couple of hours so it's hard to fit it into the schedule you know?
I still keep it on the hard drive though, I remember playing it about a month ago for example in windowed mode while I typed up a job application. Anyway hope you consider giving it another try sometime, enjoy!
The new game they're making is like a 3D version of this, it's called Infinite Space III: Sea of Stars and is already on Steam. It's still in early access though. Here's the link

It's not bad, but I'd wait for the reviews after release before buying it myself.
And hence my dilemma and frustration with DF: There is nothing out there quite like SpaceBase
Even in its simple unfinished state, its pretty much exactly what I was looking for:
Randoms stopping in with their own personalities/traits for different assignments on the station
a slow but steady DIY base you can build from the resources around you
different skills and professions to tweak
most importantly: The base is the main character. and everything is is there to make it better
Cant tell you how many times raiders have come in and wiped me out or a fire gets too out of control during the low staff days or I simply run out of air and people die: As long as I have a refinery up...I'm good! I reload maps until I get a sweet position between or surrounded by asteroids and ...ah wth, who cares this is a dead game
You know a game I played years ago (that isn't on Steam unfortunately) called Space Colony is the only one I can think of that even come close to DF. A little while ago when I was looking for Space Colony on Steam I came across another game that's in early access called Cosmonautica. It's more centred towards "ship and crew management" rather than "base and crew management". Who knows maybe that one might end up being pretty good.
