how to join a faction
Sorry this is super basic but I"m very lost.
I've given the gift boxes to villagers but is this right? How can I tell who is a pirate vs global trade? How do I join a faction?

This is based on which of the two central quest lines you choose: Elise or Garret.

I have the quest for both but it just says to become friends with global trade or pirates. How do I do that specifically? How can I tell who is pirate vs global trade? I'm stuck :(

Perhaps I can assist. The best way to tell who is pirate vs who is Trade are the locations. Scythe which is located on the bottom of the map is the Pirate main city and Freestad which is the town to the north (snowy area) is the Global Trade city. So if you want to join the pirates, look for Elise in Scythe and if you want to back the global trade then talk to Garret in Freestad.

Sorry, I feel so, so stupid, but I still don't understand.

I already talked to both of them and have quests for both pirates and global trade. Is this a glitch? The next step is to make friends with someone. Do I make friends with the person who gave me the quest???

Elise tells me to blast the global trade ships with cannons but IDK how to do that either at this point.

If you go to the crafting bench at the dock at the farm you can make cannonballs with iron. Then out on the sea, when you get close to the faction you don't want to join, mouse over them and you'll see a target reticle. Click that and you'll engage in a minigame of sink their ship. If you take down the pirate ship you'll lose rep with pirates and gain rep with global trade.

Thank you! I found the problem with the cannons at least. It's because I'm using a controller. Still don't know how to tell who is in what faction or how to join said faction unless these cannons help. I'll leave this so others know too because the game doesn't tell you and it really should.

If you're using a controller, with cannons in your inventory, use the right analog stick to target global trade ships or pirates, then when the yellow target is on them hit the action button to start a battle.
Also you can start a battle with a ship by simply sailing into their boat and that’ll trigger the combat mini game. I like to do it that way cause it’s nice and easy.

The cannons allow you to defeat faction boats in the combat mini game so you will raise rep with the faction you decided to join with each battle you win

As far as who is in what faction I don’t think it matters much. I have befriended everyone I wanted to and I sided with the pirates. Once you talk to one of the two (listed above by EnragedPotato) you then just trigger combat with the other faction. Like I said above you can just sail into a boat and the combat triggers so you don’t need to aim and shoot to start it or anything.

Hope these bits help some. I’ve played about 14 hours and really enjoy my time with it

For controller users, you can use the elbow/trigger buttons to toggle between Global Trade and Pirate ships on the open ocean. Once close enough, you can attack them.

Writing this so others know too - running into ships only works to attack them AFTER you're in a faction/have reputation.
