On a more general approach, pausing the game ensure creep is not snowballing on you is the biggest save. You want some econ and upgrades asap, then open an attack area quickly so you can start shooting at creeper.
The early map with a large "tree" is a big exemple. You can rush the right creeper by opening a tunnel and dropping a couple basic ships to stall it, then missile it when you have more energy. You do that in the first minute. Then you ignore all creeper in middle and left, within 2min of start, you dig a narrow path toward the cube that's all alone on the left and you can charge it.
Getting the pod below the lava is slightly more time-consuming, but not that difficult.
Like most other creeper titles, your early game economy is very fragile. Avoiding an early game stall is very important, and getting your energy set up is a major priority.
Look for green pixelium on the maps. They are energy boosts and are great starting points. Spend the free energy on reactors, and don't worry much about ships. As the economy grows you can start deploying everything and make full use of them.
My favorite use is to concentrate anti creep over nullifiers to protect them during a zap. It's a shame they can't magnet in more anticreep to cover themselves.
Not sure how I unlocked it though.
It unlocked for me at the same time as the other bonus level.
About pausing. I pause constantly in every Creeper game. It really is a life saver since it artificially slows down the game when things are getting crazy.
