Personally I have found both to have their uses. A thin layer across a tunnel is useful as a defensive measure whereas dropping a blob of it into a big pool of creeper is useful in attacking
But if you have options then generally spreading it thin is better, a big blob means a lot of the eater wont function because creeper can't reach it.
It is much easier to drop creeper eater downhill than it is to try moving it uphill. Try to punch downhill, so the eater can aid in battle. If it turns purple, it ran out of creeper to eat so that part is going to waste.
Ah, that's why I kept losing creeper eater. I thought it had a limited life or something.
