Failed to start game (app already running)

Hello,

I just got Sacred 2 Gold and I can play it with the latest community patch without a problem. However, whenever I launch the game, it stays in some kind of "launched" state for Steam, even though I don't see it anywhere in my processes. Steam pops an error window saying "Failed to start game (app already running)" when I try to start it again.

I can't even close Steam, as it asks me to close Sacred 2 first, which isn't running. I have to kill the Steam process manually.

What can I do ? I have already tried putting the game (and its patcher) in XP compatibility mode and it didn't help...

Hmmm... mine seems to work now. Don't know why... but I hope you guys have similar luck!

Sometimes compatibility is not the only issue. Make sure the game is also run as an Administrator. I had this same issue when I first installed and set up the game (where I had to Ctrl + alt + del to kill the game) and setting both compatibility and administrator privilages solved this. Also sometimes there are programs running that may conflict with the game, a computer restart often helps with this and may explain the game functioning suddenly.

BTW I run Windows 8 64bit, this fix should work for bother 32 bit and Windows 7 64 and 32 bit.

When I bought a new laptop sacred 2 would not run on windows 8.This is the fix I used when I got the' already running' error message...step by step.
1 Go to Computer.
2Right click on drive ...C or D whatever you used >open
3Program files x86>open
4Stean folder >open
5Look for Steam Apps >open
6Look for common >open
7Look for sacred 2 gold>open
8System >open
9Look for sacred 2 file should have 3296kb ..right click open and if it says PhysXloader.dll missing ...
Then download driver from Nvidia website or trusted source (PhysXloader.dll)
Repete above steps right click on sacred 2 icon and it should start.

When I used crtl-alt-delete, I right clicked and changed it to run in "compatability mode for Windows 8", closed it out and restarted the game. It has worked fine ever since, hope it helps!

Edit: Did after launching and it now showing up even though Steam said it was already running.

yeah, I just had this happen under Win8.1 Pro 64bit and went into the end task menu and saw it running but not displaying. On the third try the game worked just fine.

I had this issue. Go into the game folder in Steam and look for the REDIST folder. Make sure all those are installed. It was the VC (virtual C) that was stopping mine from running. Once installed, it worked fine. I'm on Windows 8.1 BTW.

This happens a lot, im not sure why but ive had it occur with different games, sacred, chivalry and even total war. Eventually it sorts itself out, though if anyone has an actual reason for it happening ide be interested in hearing it.

I had this same issue on Windows 8 with an NVidia GTX 660 ... ran program in Vista Compatibility Mode and Game runs fine now.

I had this poblem as well, and none of the above worked. I found the the Sacred 2 client was running under "background processes" in my task manager. After ending that, the game worked fine. I am running Windows 8.1 64 bit

I just had this issue but fixed it with the solution below


Install Nvidia PhysX Legacy drivers. http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx-9.12.1031-legacy-driver.html
These drivers don't interfere with the Latest PhysX drivers

Then on the desktop game icon right click it and play it as admin.Worked for me on Windows 10

Fixed game no starting by killing the process then installing "PhysX_9.10.0513_SystemSoftware.exe".

How i fixed this issue:
1. Go to steamapps\common\Sacred 2 Gold\redist\PhysX
2. click on that thing there PhysX_9.10.0513_SystemSoftware.exe and uninstall
3. click again and install
And i could start the game.
