The game is pretty old, so community patches are common for games this old.
But to answer your question, no, it's not unplayable without the community patch, but it's highly recommended that you download.
I experience graphic lags in the game, so it was suggested that i download and install a community patch (downloading it now). I'm curious to see if they fix it.
But aside from this, the patch adds a ton of stuff, fixes minor bugs (like some text or skill numbers or something), and is generally a good idea to have.
Besides, you probably have Windows 7 or 8 and the patch probably fixes the compatibility of this game with those systems. It works great without it too, but should you encounter problems (i didn't besides the lag, but that could be anything), the patch might help...
TL;DR No game is flawless but yes, it's a functioning game without the patch if you want to play it like that. And for 5 euro on sale now, it's a steal.
So, while the Steam version is the latest official version, there's also a community patch that fixes things the developers didn't get the chance to. It also adds new content which is cool...
Get the latest community patch here:

Pretty good game thus far and 5 bucks is a steal
But I would strongly recomend you to find good comunity patches. There is never a bad thing in anny game to look for comunity content that souly fixes bugs, stats etc that makes the game more balanced. The dev team of Sacred 2 went banckrupt right after the expancion was released and they where not really focused on patching the game.
go to steamapps\common\Sacred 2 Gold\system
right click sacred2.exe
click properties
Check run as administrator with windows xp compatibility settings
I initially had a problem getting it to launch with Windows 8 but If you do that it runs perfectly.
Might be a false positive. I installed that patch, and run Malwarebytes and AVG later. None of them found anything. But even if that one has it, there's other files out there.
As you can see by my hours played I love this game. It works just fine with just the steam DL. I did get the CM nod which adds content unlocks weapons and makes the game HD. It eats up GPU on Ultra setting normally, so have a rig for it modded.
Play a Shadow Warrior if you like DKs or Evil Characters. If you want to be a goody-goody play a Seraphim or High Elf (pally and Mage respectively). I recommend you read the quests... TONS of lore if you like that kind of stuff, but, humourous enough for casual Hack 'n Slashers. I give it 9.9/10 ... .1 off for the 3 crashes in 5 years.
P.S. PC is WAY better than the console version. Enjoy !!
If you are using Win8/8.1, start steam and then start game from start menu. Works eveytime. Great game ... ENJOY!!
Now, questions:
How does the community patch make the game HD? I have the 1.5 version, and it looks the same. Runs a little better than vanilla, but textures and effects are the same. Or did you install some other patch/mod? Not that i have the PC to run it, i'm just curious...
So true!
Start up error
Check the file integrity.
Maybe something got downloaded wrong...
