Take a look a the wiki before you choose the modification of a combat art because that can make a big difference.

http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Sacred_2:Combat_Arts

Your main combat art must hit multiple targets at once because the game throws tons of enemies at you, you can use another combart art for single target.

Items that have stats that lower the regeneration time of your combart arts are useful.

For skills: All combat arts a character has are split into three categories ("aspects").
For example all fire combat arts of the high elf are grouped together in the Pyromancer Aspect.

Every Aspect has two skills that greatly boost all combat arts of this aspect. This two skills you must skill if you focus on this aspect.

For example for Pyromancer this is Pyromancer Focus (lowers regen time) and Pyromancer Lore (increases damage). So if you want to use Fireball you need to take these two skills.

If you use a specific weapon to do damage you also skill the skill for this weapon type.
If you just use spells you skill Ancient Magic.
Basically every char takes Concentration.

-Great thread.

For people like myself who wish to avoid using the wiki or to avoid spoilers and established builds and just wishes to theorycraft blind- Where is a good place for the type of more basic information? The diversity in skills and combat arts is incredile

The community patch seems to solve a lot of bugs, so I'd say it's a must.

As for the other part of your question, merchantmudcrab has made a very good summary. The skills and combar arts system is quite complex, and in my experience you won't likely fully understand it the first playthrough (or at least the first couple of hours).

What I suggest (and this goes to SaintPhillip too) is that you make a backup of your save folder and experiment with your character, specially if you don't want to follow any established build. In this game, it is very easy to mess things up, and sometimes you end up regretting a skill o combat art modification you got 10 levels before, and there's no way to respec. So go ahead, save your saves folder every couple of levels and have fun. If you want to change something, just load that previous save.

Good suggestion-

I would also add that I just discovered that there is, in fact, a death penalty (I didnt know this-) which affects what gear is sold at merchants, enemy levels and stat buffs.

Game is very, very, very complex. Something I am loving tbh. And I also like the fact you cannot respec but already have started over a few times experimenting. =)

Yes, I don't really mind starting over and think it is part of the fun, but anyways the first two areas are my favorite ones so I don't care if I have to go through them all over again. Creating a new character when you're level 30 or above isn't that much fun.

I agree with you on your thoughts on the complexity of the game. It is really deep and allows for a lot of possible builds and a lot of replayability. Take for instance what you just said: I didn't know that dying affected your item discovery as well, and I've already played almost 100 hours!

Once you get past some pains like the camera, it ends up being a great experience.

The main component of Sacred 2 (and Sacred 1) system is that there is no mana or so for using the combart arts, they all just have cooldowns. But the cooldowns increase with every level of the combat art.

So the important thing is not to consume all combart art runes that drop (right click on them) right away to level up the combart art. Check before if the cooldown is short enough so it is comfortable to use the combart art. The tooltip of the combart art shows the current cooldown and that of the next level.

With putting points into certain skills and attributes (you get the points when you level up your char) and certaint equipment you reduce the cooldowns to keep everthing in balance.

If you plan on skilling dual wielding, do not level up your attack modifier skill such as, hafted weapons, sword weapons, and such because dual wielding gives the same effects and it will be used over those attack modifiers like sword weapons and hafted weapons which wouldn't be used at all over dual wielding. So level up dual wielding and only choose your modifier for the melee weps you use to unlock their modifier and never level it past lvl 1, keep it at lvl 1 and level up your dual wielding.
