I can’t speak to Steams version since I don’t have it.
What is the best version to use with the Community Patch? https://darkmatters.org/forums/index.php?/files/file/91-community-patch/
I've rarely used GoG apart for getting a really old game that flared up my interest.
Although I can reassure you that have used my Sacred 2: Gold Edition upon both a Windows 7 Operating System (OS) and now currently upon an Windows 10 OS and I'm not even noticing a difference.
Also, had installed the jsGME games' mod manager to easily install and remove the "Enhanced Edition" mod'[darkmatters.org].
This way, if I want to try out for example the "Purist Fix Pack" mod[darkmatters.org] I'll simply have to remove the "Enhanced Edition" mod and also disable the Community Patch[darkmatters.org] prior to test driving it (i.e, advised caution to people trying those mod swaps because at least some weapons items from one mod aren't compatible with the "Purist FP" one).
I also don't like much the expansion, but it fixes lots of bugs and broken quests, so it is mandatory I suppose. But with those community fixes, may I don't install the expansion? Or the fixes need the expansion?
The "Purist FP" mod doesn't require the Comunity Patch because it also includes that data upon its modifying info' towards Sacred 2 Gold. From my brief experience with it, it has some flashier weapon visuals and weapon scaling done properly (for instance, an Heavy Sword is bigger than a normal Rapier).
But what got most of my interest in it was that it managed to keep track of your quests getting done without you having to constanly open the map to search for it whenever you finish a side quest (i.e., the silver arrow pointer when playing and the grey Circles when opened the map).
Tbh, thus far I haven't fiddled much with it and had returned to the Community Patch with the "Enhanced DEdition" mod mostly because I was more accustomed to it and when wanting to move and delete the items from my common vault that are from the later being upon the "Purist FP" it prevents you from moving those and they appear as if they're corrupted / unrecognized data (logically, from my perspective.
Although the differences between those tow mods were very well explained in the links athat I've left you above, so... if you're interested to try each be sure to read it a tad more carefully.
