Report a translation problem
I write with a translation program, because my English is not so good.
You can leave lines in circles, I do not find it effective,
It is better so:
Line 1: From North to South. Then back.
A road can be free:
Line 2: From North to South. Then back.
A road can be free:
Etc.pp.
Then I let the intersections crossing
Line xx: from East to West
A road can be free:
Line yy: from East to West
A road can be freely
Etc.pp.
The stops are at the same crossroads ::
short transfer
So a stop in the north-west street and a stop in the east west road,
So give rise to many points of intersection!
And money also comes together

For the begining of the game I always make circle lines, because I can cover more ground with less stops and less lines and its more profitable per line. BUT, as soon as I can I will make straight lines (go and back same street) because I will get more passengers. The point is that as you said, the maintanance of these lines are much higher. But in a way you get more passengers, even demanding passengers, such as bussiness people and white collars that won't tolerate huge detours.
But why get more passengers in a way? Because making several straight lines will only get more passengers if you have the network effect. So, if your map is covered enough that most people can reach their destinations with your transport network. Otherwise it will only cost more and have less profit.
To summarize, you will get less profit with straight lines but at total you get much higher profit because the connecting lines will have a lot more people and a lot more profit.
I have a great example in my current saved game. Its Yersk map with 3 island. 1 island only with circle lines and 1 island only with straight (2 ways) lines. You can compare. I can upload if you are interested.
And you can see more about circle and straight lines on the CiM Interactive Guide, search for 3.2 Types of lines. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/70431747/CiM%202%20Interactive%20Guide/story.html
Otherwise my single circle lines are relatively short and cover an area, more as a way to gather passengers to a transport hub rather than actually getting them somewhere.
