I felt that, not for the second game but for last years awful Reboot; Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
I personally enjoyed Tomb Rider 1 and 2, not for their storylines, but for the gameplay and complexity of its level design, the exploration and atmosphere; But... from there, one thing I got to admit, the series has had its ups and downs ever since.
Kudos for mentioning Metal Gear Solid, RE2 and Soul Reaver though (never played FF7), those were the bomb back in the days!
Your argument toward "I thought the story and story telling was bad" holds no water considering you put Crash Team Racing on the list, which doesn't really have a story.
A big aspect of Tomb Raider 2 is it's ambience and level design. I'm sorry you couldn't get into it, but I'd suggest playing it again at some point. Since it is a great game I still like to this day.
Unless this is all just bait, since it comes off as such. Whatever.
are you lost your mind?
Tomb Raider 2 also has cutscenes and voice acting.

They feature very similar gameplay and ambiance but most are in vastly different locations. Some are more story focused whereas some are less. Like 3 is more like 2, albeit slightly more story focused, and has maps in modern buildings and stuff.
4 is more character focused and has a distinct antagonist and a distinct goal besides just "collect the artifacts". It also has non-linear progression where you return to prior maps with new artifacts to solve old puzzles.
