How I got TR2 Gold to work in widescreen and fullscreen

I read a lot about installing Gold and getting it to work correctly. Lot's of people have problem with widescreen or fullscreen as did I. Here is how I got it working.

In general I followed this topic on TombRaiderForums https://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=211383

1. The first problem I encountered was that I could not run the Gold installation setup.exe on my Win10 system. I got around that by downloading an "installed" copy from a guide here on Steam, https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=337717312 which contained the data folder I needed.

2. I then followed the rest of the tutorial on TRF. The game would now run but not in fullscreen or widescreen.

3. To fix the windows border I tried the Garrett fullscreen border fix but it wouldn't work. From the download site for that it mentions it can be done with a Compatibility Administrator tool, but microsoft says it's no longer available. Posts in the topic recommend the Borderless Gaming app, but I really dislike having to run extra apps just to run a game. In post #69 Arsunt (the person behind the TR2Main patch) posted a patched version of T2gold.exe for fullscreen. 4. For widescreen, I used BlackFour's widescreen patch. It patched successfully. I'm not sure what the best settings are for FOV and camera distance so I left it on the defaults.

5. It now ran in widescreen, but the displayed screen was too large, with menu items disappearing off the bottom of the screen. To fix this, I right clicked the game shortcut, and under Properties / Compatibility / Change high DPI settings I checked High DPI scaling override for the application.

I've only played a little but I haven't had any problems yet.


So, I hope this will be helpful for someone, or if you have better suggestions I would like to hear them.
