It is type of ware, which you are allowed to share with others so they can try it out on their own, hence the term shareware. Today you could call it a demo version maybe (back in the day when that term was convcieved, demo was mostly non-playable presentation/showcase, while shareware was actual playable version of that game). Later it became mostly the same thing.

That's not the same with all shareware. The original Duke Nukem games and other Apogee titles originally only came with one exe whereas the full registered title was usually more than one exe.

Actually shareware versions were bigger than demos - could be even considered satisfying games in their own right. I mean, id Software's shareware version of DOOM had entire 1/3rd of the game. The same was with Duke Nukem games.

That you could unlock and get by calling a phone number, something like 1-555-dukenukem or 1-555-id-software, the good old time of dial up connections :D

It is confusing indeed. I just finished Enter the Wang and the game ends after 4th chaper, so I came here to the forum in panic wondering if I did something wrong... Now everything is clear.... I guess so...

BTW, I remember the good old times when a games magazine used to come out every month with a CD featuring 3-6 demos. I enjoyed playing all those demos long like hell and I used to think that I don't need to buy full games having such beautiful long shareware episodes. It was almost like piracy, but legal! Shadow Warrior was one of those games that I played in shareware version back in the 90's and I loved it, but I never played the full version... until now. Good old times.

incorrect. the shareware part always had a lot of features missing and is usually much shorter than the rest of the game.

in doom the first few levels were a quick breeze, the final boss are just uncommon enemies in the later episodes and there was no BFG and plasma cannon.

similar with duke nukem, the shareware episode had 6 levels instead of 10 lacked all the weapons after the pipe bomb were missing.

thats how it was with every game
