Atomic Edition (what GOG and 3D Realms' site sells) is just the original three episodes from the registered game with "The Birth" episode (originally was on an expansion pack called "Plutonium Pack" from what I read).

Megaton Edition is basically the Atomic Edition, plus three expansions, Duke It Out In DC, Nuclear Winter, and Duke Caribbean Life's A Beach.

The difference is Atomic and Megaton are the engines. Atomic from GOG (where I first bought the game) is DOS with software rendering (uses DOSBox), while Megaton is OpenGL (based off JFDuke3D and EDuke32 guessing from the credits screen) and DOSBox for Atomic. Mouse aiming works in DOS, but it isn't as smooth as say a source port.

From what I remember from the old Mac Duke 3D demo I played in 1997, I remember using keyboard only with the game. So I guess not much thought about using the mouse then. That's my guess.

You also don't have to insert your Atomic Edition cd to play the Megaton edition :)

BTW, if you enjoy the original DOS feel the CD version gives you, just choose the "classic" (right-click Duke Nukem 3D) option and it will let you play the original as is. ^^

Back in 1997, I was 11, basically had to play under mom's ok and with the "adult mode" off. Mom was ok with it as she taught me from right and wrong, and trusted I wouldn't repeat actions from it, which I didn't. To be honest, all I did was explore E1M1, was the first time I actually played a game like Duke, let alone anything 3D.

Yes, it came from a demo CD from MacHome magazine in 1997 (we had no Internet at the time). The CD was filled with demo software, but had two demos of Duke 3D, on for 68K Macs, one for PowerPC Macs. The Mac I played it on at the time used System 7 (basically MacOS' older name).

All the demo was was E1M1 to E1M3, unlike the DOS shareware, which had the whole first episode.

Well, it WAS a demo...
I remember getting my hands on the shareware demo... the first time... the day after... my dad came home with the full game!

And i wasen\ allowed to play it, because he wanted to... kinda cruel in a way...
like.. let your kid get a taste of the game, and then shove the kid aside so one can play the WHOLE game first..

oh and my father died more times then i could count on the first 4 missions...
After that, i got so mad at my dads inability to play so i went to play with my lego...

i had so much lego back then that i could remake e1m2, which i did... my baby-like brother wanted to join me playing with the lego, but i did not allow him, causehe ALWAYS destroyed my contraptions :P
