Same problem.
configuration says only Keyboard needed. Wastet money on a controller...I don't need for playing the game

I played with the XBone controller and it worked fine ( using vJoy and correct drivers etc ). I haven't tried with the PS4 one. I really do recommend a controller with two sticks though.

Maqybe I bought the wrong controller. System find it and setting for game controller shows that it works.

You guys indeed bought the wrong gamepad. Nowadays basically all games expect an XInput gamepad. That is the Xbox 360 gamepad, the XBox one gamepad and the Logitech thingy mentioned on the Steam Big Picture page. The latter might be right if you're desperate for an PS-esque gamepad, but beware that it's quality is sub-par.

You could try configure your gamepad in Steam Big Picture and launch the game from there, Steam usually emulates an XInput device.

I have a wired Xbox controller for PC but I need a USB adapter for it to work with my newer desktop, and I'm waiting for that to get here. It better work. I have gotten through the first couple of chapters with the keyboard controls, being a pianist I don't find it too hard although awkward, but I think I'd enjoy the game more with a controller.

You can solder the adaptor yourself.

This goes with ALL CONTROLLER-SUPPORTED GAMES ON STEAM: If you want to play with a controller you really should have an Xbox 360 controller. It is the only controller that will work 100% of the time. Even third-party, xinput controllers still don't even work all the time. And if you're depending on a PS3/4 controller to work, then you're going to need to use an emulator, and even then, there's no guarantee it will work.

Eventually, I bet the Xbone controller will be just as widely supported as the 360, but it's far too new right now. But anyway:

Controller supported = Xinput controllers.
100% dependency = Xbox 360 controller.
Anything else = emulator.

Actually, it also works via XInput so it is as widely supported as the XBox 360 one.

In theory. I haven't seen the Xbone controller used enough to have a strong understanding, though. But generic controllers usually use xinput too, but for some reason, they don't always work.

So xinput alone isn't enough to ensure a controller will function.

I hereby prove the theory right by facts.
As for "generic controllers", this one is from Microsoft, the makers of the XInput API. So who cares about generic controllers?

Probably. We'll see, I suppose. The fact that Windows doesn't natively support it yet is the other point of concern- You need to manually download the drivers for it.

In fact, Windows doesn't natively support the XBox 360 gamepad either. When you plug it in, a driver is being downloaded and installed. As for the XBox One gamepad, it's a "not yet". Give it a little time.

Which was exactly my original point: "Eventually, I bet the Xbone controller will be just as widely supported as the 360, but it's far too new right now."

Your point is not right. It's not an "eventually", it's "It's supported as widely as the XBox 360 gamepad because it's identical API-wise".
