Personally 5 has probably the best story in the entire series, and does the most in the series to separate, and add in new mechanics to the gameplay.
4 only comes behind 5, because of 5's mechanics though. The story in 4 is pretty great too. And you can never have too many SARDINES!
The story so far in 7 isn't terrible, but thus far, no where near as good as 5, or 4. But it definitely made a comeback, after the trash that was dubbed "Disgaea 6".
Honestly, I'm, surprised there even was a Disgaea 7, and just randomly stumbled upon it on Steams front page. I'm pretty sure I read articles saying Disgaea 6 nearly Bankrupt NIS. So, it's very surprising to see a 7th game. I'm grateful for the amazing comeback though, and hope NIS keeps releasing these materpieces of Tactics games. Not many other Tactics games can compare to Disgaea, it's right up there with Final Fantasy Tactics, and Tactics Ogre, just switches it up to over-the-top insanity.
5 had the best overall cast of characters and story + modern gameplay.
1 actually still IMO has the best story and characters, like 1 has Kurtis and that alone makes it better than every other Disgaea. 1 was a revolution at its time and was a breath of fresh air in how to tell stories in this kind of tactical RPG. It's a little dated today which is why Disgaea 5 is better to play. Every other Disgaea feels like a cheap carbon copy of D1 frankly in terms of story and characters, except maybe Disgaea 2 which was going for something different.
Disgaea 5 and 7 are the best because of how they handle their characters and plot. Both have similar plotlines, main difference is one is 5 is about a guy hiding his true feelings and just trying to be the strongest, 7 is about a guy hiding his true feelings and trying to make money for reasons. Both have great stories and character arcs, and the supporting cast is awesome. Disgaea 4 has a similarly solid story and cast, in fact in many ways I'd put D4's mc and plot above D7's, but in many ways D7 is also better.
The rest of the Disgaeas range in quality with their handling of their cast and plots, and a lot of the characters feel extremely one-dimensional in ways that the better Disgaeas don't. Disgaea 3 for instance has very weird characters who feel extremely one-dimensional and inconsistent. D4 has a some of that too. Disgaea 6 is generally the worst of the lot when it comes to this. Most of the cast is not endearing and their character flaws/cliches get annoying and grating. Disgaea 2 is a bit of an exception to the series and feels like they were trying to be more "serious" handling the characters and plot. It felt out of place in a Disgaea game, that appeals to some but personally I think it kind of forgot that it was a Disgaea game. Most of the characters aside from Axel just felt like they weren't over-the-top-amazing the way Disgaea 1's cast was. I think this is why every Disgaea after 2 went back to doubling down on the wackiness of the plot and characters the way Disgaea 1 did.
The gameplay mechanics are another reason. D5 has the best mechanics overall. It introduced chara world, great class mastering system, improved the reincarnation and dark assembly, basically refined all the elements D1 introduced and made them all better and much more playable. D7 keeps all of that and the best parts of D6.
D6 had problems like the hyper-fast leveling and the automation, and the shift to 3D was jarring for a lot of people. A lot of the complaints around D6 were that it felt like you weren't playing the game anymore. I get why they did it, but it came across wrong and most people felt like they were programming a game instead of playing a game with D6. This is why they limited the Demonic AI in D7 so it wouldn't fall prey to the same complaint.
How ever original game play is more simple and brain dead easy compare to other series. I don't find much fun out of it. I can't really say much about it since it you can't really do much in old version any way.
I find every Disgaea game is best for difference reason.
If I want more game play and better custom colors and character build. It will be D5.
If want more of joke comedy it will be D7.
If want a bit more animation on cutscenes on character talking to each other and better custom home base build and fight other user invader in item world. It will be D4.
If I want more DLC cross over. It will be D3.
If want more..... Over crazy number in higher static stuff and be really lazy at the same times. It will be....... D6...... Yeah.....
Much needed changes and small yet welcome refinements to gameplay.(evil gacha, item recarinations, item world auto expeditions instead of netherworld auto expeditions, etc).
Story and characters are pretty good. Tho in hindsight that might be cuz after the massive failure that was Disgaea 6, with a downright cringe story/characters, that it biases even a normal story/likable characters to be seem really good. I still think Disgaea 1 and 4 had the best of this department.
Online although isn't impressive, least it's not a failure for once. And that is saying something. Feels like the rewards are nice/useful unless you're doing the infinite poltergas exploit. But that said cheating is thankfully heavily deterred from the basic design of the online this time. Where as in past games it was heavily encouraged.
No D1 certainly is nostalgia since it was the first, mechanics and how it works are going to be a bit dated now a days. Story was great.
D2 I actually kinda loved even more for very specific touches to the story and characters. Not everything was better than D1 but sometimes taking a different approach is how you learn some new things and grow and there may be those that enjoy it.
D3 I was actually kinda into for it's zaniness. The set up felt like D1 chaotic nature dialed up and it had a few VA's in english I'm fond of so that helped.
D4 was......fun I suppose. I don't remember it too well anymore. I mostly just remember the annoyance of the ending fight in the story where I was clearly not leveled up enough but grinding gets boring to me if done too much and I was trying to be stubborn with it. That might have tainted the memory a bit.
D5 just bored me out. I can't remember if it was the characters, the story, or what have you, but it just wasn't doing it for me up until I quit. I actually find it kind of bizarre some people are saying it's the best. Certainly not how I felt.
D6 and D7 haven't played. Feel off the series after D5 bored me out. I'd consider D7 but the price didn't go on sale and the dlc characters slapped on top of that is kind of a high asking price, something I've grown less fond of the more games in this series come out, but from what I remember dlc characters are usually more meant for end game which I rarely partake in due to the continuing of grinding.
I will say though, it's definitely nice having for item world though.
7 is absolutely the best.
The board game. sending units off on expeditions left good a good impression on me.
To bad the sequel had kinda ♥♥♥♥ level design.
Release them from psp hell and sequel when?
