Better than 6 in the gameplay but so far the story is garbage. D4 IMO was good but I prefer D5 so currently for me D5 > D4 > D6 > D7
Why D6 is better than D7 right now ? The story is important and if a map was too long because I'm strong enough to roll on the ennemies I could auto battle and advance the story, here I can't and getting rewarded with the advancement of a plot I don't really care about isn't great.
The 3D graphism didn't really bother me but some skills in D7 are pretty ugly, and I was playing D6 on Switch with the lowest performance mode..........
So currently I'll say it's overpriced especialy since DLC characters are important, the mascot really increase your grinding since she can increase the movement/Mana & XP/ HL gained for all allies, for PvP you need the DLC characters so I'm not spending 100$ for the game, well a friend of mine bought it day 1 and regret it so now I'm on it and I understand what she was talking about now.......
I'm only on chapter 4 at the moment, but I'm enjoying this a lot. It feels like home. A complete reversal of (most) of the mistakes made in 6, except we're never getting the 2.5D sprites back :(
In terms of story, a lot better, IMO. Fuji is a very entertaining character and his dynamic with Piririka is really fun. I love Pirririka's monologues, but I feel the english translation of some of them could've been much better. (The translation all around feels lacking to me.)
Story is great, not as grandiose or silly as Disgaea 4 but definitely worth paying attention to. (Personnaly I disliked Disgaea 4 story past chapter 3. it didn't reach me and I disliked the two sister character)
There's about 6 or so main cast, the story revolves around the two protagonist in a similar fashion to Disgaea 2. The twist aren't as predictable as Disgaea 6 and not as "in your face" as Disgaea 5. and the pacing is probably the second or third best of the franchise.
As for difficulty, it can't even compare to Disgaea 4. it's piss easy. almost to a disappointing level.
you can literaly clear all Baal stages, including carnage, in a single turn without trying as long as you prepare for the counter damage, counter attack or initial damage upon entering the stage. you don't NEED to cap your stats and all you need for equips are shoes. I'm so used to dealing with Baal while struggling that I... feel disappointed. I don't feel fulfilled for having 100% achievements.
While the 4rth wasn't much to my liking, it was a much better game despite the clunkyness and evilities system.
how long it took me to 100% this game?
About 50hr or so. I just played more because I wanted to try to fully max out a character while using the Seal evility gained from one of the Baal. Also trying to play around in the Item World.... I wanted my money worth of playtime.
I skipped nothing. No fast forward, no skip, no autoplay, many breaks AFK for long period of time. 50 hr to clear the final Baal stage, add like 10 to have full achievments, then another 40 "for fun".
No challenge. Pick your favorite character or Ao then max out movement, get assault attack from mastering Valkyrie (Female warrior) and just one shot everything...
A melee character with 15 attack range, 24 movement, 14 counter, 30+ crit chance, 1b hp/sp, 20m all stats... I got 30+ of these... and 3 Maiko, all dlc characters... all soft-capped with similar stats.
I'm giving up getting 99m all stats. it's not fun enough.
If I had to truly compare D7 to another... it would be close to a mixture of 2 and 5 but without the challenge.
As far as difficulty and ease of breaking the game, that's been a staple of the series since the very first game. Disgaea has never been a hard game once you understand the mechanics, and the game gives you plenty of tools to break things intentionally, it's just learning the mechanics that takes some time. If you think D7 is too easy it's just because you've gained a firm grasp of the mechanics by playing previous games and were able to more effectively apply that knowledge to the game this time around. You'll probably find D8 even easier, not because it is, but because you are better at the game. If you want to stick with the series long term you have to learn to handicap yourself to some extent and not instantly min-max the perfect path to completion. Enjoy the journey and stop rushing to the destination, that only leads to disappointment, in any game.
I bought the game on release and I've put 60 hours into it so far, and I still haven't taken on the first form of Baal and can barely deal with low tier LoC item gods. I'm not using optimal characters or strategies though, and it's been loads of fun getting to where I am. I've done the rush to the end thing before and regretted it, I raced to the top of the original EN leaderboards for D4(D3?) and sat there for a while, below only somebody with a gameshark, it's just not worth it. (I was Zaishi/Darq on gameFAQs if there are any oldschool Disgaea community members around.)
I did one item world to check the changes, and I went in at lvl 25, came out lvl 110ish, totally over powered me for the story.
They should either lock the item world, or have the story lightly scale with your lvl.
The cheat shop allows for scaling. Disgaea is very much a "choose your own difficulty" sort of game. But ya, going into the item world in this on is an example of how to trivialize the game, I did the same thing and then reincarnated my characters to get back down to a lower level.
I completed the 4 but did not stick with the post-game. Still my favorite story and set of characters. Valvatorez is the most noble demon, fight me!
Gameplay wise, the 5 was my favorite. The expansion of Evility slots, class mastery and the chara world boardgame are all engaging. Sunk so much time and still polishing my stats to face Baal.
I truly loved the 6. Aside from horrible performance that makes the 3D look even worse, it is cool to have it portable on the Switch. it really managed to re-invent itself, and unlocking higher level cap with each stage of post-game kept the progression fresh during the grind.
Now, the 7 give an iterresting and complete Disgaea experience. It haves it's unique mechanics to differientate it. The progression to the post-game is straight-forward and let you focus on building your power-fantasy. They made cool changes to item, with passive buff and a reincarnation system instead of 100s upon 100s of floor.
In the end, if you like Disgaea you gonna have fun.
Game play wise, I still feel as if 5 still has the most refined mechanics and depth in the series, but 7 feels as if it's trying to switch things up, some good, some... questionable.
As far as these changes go:
- Jumbification doesn't feel as good as magichange,
-It's said that item world can eventually be dropped and isn't ultimately necessary to hit the max stat goals. However, the changes to item world has been fun .
- Team attack's been reworked (I've never bothered using the new version yet)
- There's no tower attacks. (There's not even shared exp.)
The downside to the changes is that I don't think they've hit the sweet spot in regards to the importance of certain mechanics. but its been an interesting change of direction.
I can see myself trying to go the distance with this game, and I've no problems recommending this to disgaea fans who're on the shelf on its mechanics.
Its pricing however...
7 isn't bad. Still better than 6.
I ended up just really not liking it. The characters and story feel way too weeaboo-centric for my tastes, the gameplay feels worse than 5, and overall, when I am just starting a new Disgaea and thinking I would rather be replaying 5 or 4, that's not good.
I am baffled Disgaea 7 has as good reviews as it does. I guess just being mildly better than 6 has distracted people from how mediocre and mid 7 is.
