The protagonist is you. Just pick any generic female model
But the game as previous ones has several protagonists, which affect story in the different way and have different impact. So it's not like you could pick protag from the start. But you could play any of them that you like. All cutscenes are scripted, so you cannot alter them.

You have 2 Main Characters in this game. Male+Female MC which you get introduced to really early on. Basicly in the first 10 minutes of the game if not even faster.

the story takes place around Fuji (male) and Pirilika (female). For the games, we select who want to choose.

you're literally a female protagonist, piririka the otaku class demon. after that, like any disgaea game ever you can choose to take on the role of any of the characters you create or who joined your party through dark assembly.

You can change a characters description to put whatever you want in their Status (I think) page. There also exists an evility that allows you to change gender.

I choose Pirilika early on. Reason that I feel a bit more relatable to not knowing other side of party very well in their culture.

i always play with some generic character as "me" , i played every disgaea but the 3 and i NEVER liked the main characters , i level up them just to not die in the forced battles

I actually thought that everyone doing so. I think playing with generic characters and entire generic party is much more fun. Well, D1, D2 were exceptions for me.

Same. Ever since the first game we've only used generic characters. That's why we dropped 6 super fast when we found it barely had any.

Yeah, I always use the "protagonist" and then a full party of generics!
