This is a sound card problem. Have you installed the latest drivers for your sound card??

You can also try this: Go to Start menu and select Run. Write "dxdiag" to get the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window. Go to the sound tab and drag the cursor to Basic acceleration or No
acceleration.

And
Have you installed the v42 and v49 patches or the latest one?

I have an iMac and have a program on it called VMware Fusion which allows me to have windows on my mac so am not entirely sure if I have the latest drivers and I tried the whole dxdiag but for me there is no basic acceleration or no acceleration in the sound tab

Im not entirely sure about the iMac but uh. Did you try the patches? Or if anything, you can download a save and continue from there onwards.
Im not sure if I can help you much, im on windows OTL
Still, try the patches and tell me if its still giving that error

When I click on the link you sent me it says 404 error so I couldn't try them :(

Try that. Cause I had it in brackets, it got part of the link.

I found the download links for the patches, do I have to put them in a folder, or will it work automatically?
Pau Jan 13, 2013 @ 1:33pm
should work automatically, what build is your game saying? (can find it on the menu sceen)

Ok will download the patches now and my build is 52, says patch 4.9 could harm my computer so I can't download that one. And now my game crashes as soon as I load the save...

It shows that for all the downloads, I use tombraiderchronicles.com and stella's website for walkthroughs, save games etc.
Did you do this for that dxdiag thing?

Go to Start > Run and type dxdiag, press Ok (if it asks you a question, click YES). When the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window opens, go to the Sound tab and from the DirectX Features box set the Hardware acceleration from Full acceleration to Basic acceleration or No Acceleration.

If anything try to find out how to update your drivers on an iMac, Google it or something.
If your sound driver is up to date, it must be a corrupted save. Thats all I can think about u.u;;

I'm having the same problem but when I go to dxdiag, I don't have the option to change the hardware acceleration. I have Windows 7. Is there any way I can access that?
Slog101 Mar 14, 2013 @ 6:04am
I'm also having similar problems i've downloaded the patch i'm on build 52 i've also tried the dxdiag thing it didn't give me an option to change the acceleration.

quoted from gog's forum

1. Click Settings in the launcher.
2. Go to the tab with your video card.
3. Under the FMV section, enable VMR9.

I have solved by this method.
Alan Baxter Apr 26, 2014 @ 12:57pm
Enabling VMR9 seems to have eliminated the crash at the end of the cutscene after using the control panel to shut down the power to the Bio-Research Facility. I also haven't had any crashes while playing the game since disabling sound hardware acceleration in the Settings in the launcher: Check Sound->Software->Compatibility Mode.

I still get some crashes when loading some of my old savegames in Strahov Fortress, but none recently. Maybe I've just been lucky.

Edit: It crashed again several times while loading some of my Sanitarium saved games, even with the changes mentioned above. Loading the saved game usually worked after I restarted the game, so at least this bug isn't a show-stopper for me.

Another solution would be to turn off the whole audio for a while in the settings. It helped me so far. After I completed the Strahov Fortress and went into the Bio-Research Facility I turned it back on and the game didn´t crash anymore.
