Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000)

Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000)

Compatibility with Windows 10
Hi,

I have tried and tried to get Tomb Raider: Chronicles to work with Windows 10, and to no avail.

After the initial crash, I first tried setting compatibility to Windows 98 (This is the only OS compatibility setting that worked as well as it did eventually), which seemed to work for others. No luck

I then tried launching setup.exe through steam settings on launch. This, in addition to the previous item I tried, worked up until the end of the first cutscene, and caused a crash afterwards.

Finally, I tried, as a last resort, launching the updater from the tombraiderchronicles website, hoping to fix this issue. I got an error message stating that the updater is only compatible with windows XP/Vista (I downloaded the one for Windows 7 though, why does it give me this message?)

I'm out of ideas. Out of 200+ games in my library, this is the only one crashing this badly. Can anyone help me?

Keep in mind, I've only been PC gaming for about a a year and 3/4, so please don't be too judgemental if I've left out any important detail, or haven't done something I should have, or something of the nature.

Thanks,

Michael

EDIT: I forgot my specs. I really don't think it matters in this case, however.

Windows 10 64 bit, 32 GB DDR3 Ram, 4 TB 7200 RPM hard drive, Nvidia GTX 1060 Graphics Card, Intel i7 4.0 GHz processor for my desktop (The machine I attempted to play on)

Windows 10 64 bit, 16 GB DDR3 Ram, 1 TB (7200 RPM?) hard drive, Intel HD Graphics 5500 (the same as an Nvidia GT 720 or 730), Intel i7 2.4 GHz dual core processor for my laptop (did not attempt on this machine)

The only way I found to get it running on Windows 10 is to use the DirectX "wrapper" described in the discussion directly below yours:

As well as preventing crashes, it also fixes issues with the overlay and window borders.

The Steam version should already be fully updated, so just in case the "updater" you used actually changed something, you might want to first "Verify Integrity of Game Cache":

Thank you, Calmly Frenetic, for providing things I could attempt.

Edit: cleaning the registry didn't work, but after reading closely that Chuck Mussarela intended for the user to copy only the items from the MS folder into the Tomb Raider Chronicles file, I attempted this, and it worked!

I did attempt this before, however, it was just the fact that I missed the MS folder. I will make note to look more closely for things like this next time.

I guess the moral of the story is read more carefully in the forums. Missing one tiny but important detail like that can throw you off.
