So just to make sure, this is a keyboard-only game, right?
I can't manage to use the classic mouse+keyboard control, where WASD is used for moving left/right/forward/backward, and the exact direction to turn is set by the mouse. If so, do later games in the series support such control?

Ok, I found the answer. Mouse control was added[tombraiders.net] two games later, in Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness. Oh well, at least I only paid a buck and some change for this game. Moving on....

you might somehow be able to use a controller, but no, it isn't WASD :(

I just moved on to Tomb Raider Legend, and guess what? Mouse control finally works in this 2006 game (7th in the series), but sidestep is removed. WTF?

Gotta love those complains from people who play the game for the first time in 2013 xD Guys, its an old game! U cant enforce modern gameplay on old TR games :P Controls type is trivial here cuz TR1, TR2 and so on became classics for so much more.

Control in this game is absolutely painful. I can't move between rooms without frequently bumping into walls. I can't see how anyone can enjoy playing this way.

BTW, many games that proceeded this one (some by several years) supported proper mouse+keyboard. It's not like this movement scheme was unheard of at the time.

yeah move to legend and you will be missing some great games just because you can get used to the controls, after a few minutes is not that hard at all

It picks up the 360 controller for me in the control configuration screen in game. (from the options menu on title screen)

And lets me set buttons to whatever. And works fine.
Probably be better with a pad without the 360 analog triggers though. Or it'll be stuck with 2 buttons less than the original PS pad.

I tend to use old PS2 dual-analog controllers through a USB convertor thingamajig, if the 360 triggers don't get picked up by a game and I need the buttons.

I've got about 6 of them lying around though. Which I suppose helps.
I sort of hoard PC pads. I've got about 30 (not joking) of the things.

What can i say....Controls in this game is totally fine and i can't understand how someone can have any problem with it, lol.

Yeah works ok with a 360 pad once you sorted out all the buttons.
You can still move the camera in the game by holding in a key (don't remember which) and you could steer the camera from Lara's perspective. It was actually a really nifty feature, imo.

The modern games have Lara's head moving in the position of the camera, but subtly, it's just not the same. The control of Lara in the earlier games was actually my favourite due to how heavy and immersive it was because of this.
