Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 (2001)

This game would be perfect. If....
I have been playing this for the past couple of weeks for a stream. And I seriously have a check list of fixes for this game. I don't know of any mods to help with any of this so if there are by all means let me know. But other wise here is what I would ask to make this a fully functional game.

1) PROPER CONTROLLER SUPPORT. The biggest problem I have with this game, is that it's very obviously just ripped from the PS2 version without any thought and slapped into the PC world. You need to fix the controllers, both old, and more modern ones. This just isn't done, and due to these problems, combat, which you are btw forced into more time than I can count, becomes nearly impossible most of the time. Not only that but the camera has a mind of it own, made worse by the fact that it's also the doge options on mouse as well? WTF?! Needs to be redone ground up.
2) Also with the problems in combat, Blocking does nothing, ever. Unless your the enemy of course, they block bloody well everything. Bull. If doesn't work for you it doesn't work for them.
3) And another thing that only serves to complicate things are the puzzles. By the time we're in the 3rd Temple, I haven't a clue what I'm meant to be doing and if I have to look up a walk through in the middle of a stream, then a game just isn't worth playing for me. At least hint to us after a while what we are meant to do, other wise it's pointless to try, much less continue on with a game that is only wasting my time and my viewer's time.
4) And finally compadability issues. Of all the things on this list, this should be the esiest, and yet every one has this game crashing on there systems. You need to set compadabilaty to Windows 98? Really!? Lazy.

Untill such problems are fixed, I'm done trying to stream this game. 2/5 for only the story and voice acting, but if you can't make this game playable then I see no reason why any one should ever want the PC copy of this game. And with how bad PS2 Emulation still is, I can't say that's a good alternative either. Only way you can play this is to still have a PS2, which is really sad.

1 - Why is combat impossible? You MUST controll the camera yourself, problem fixed.
2 - Blocking works, you take decreased damage. Only charged attacks will break the block.
3 - Puzzles are not hard by any means, I can complete them without looking really... If you had to look up for a solution, games were you have to actually think might not be for you...
4 - Not crashing for me, but there are some technical issues (regedit and google is your help here).

This game has an amazing story and characters and is perfectly playable. If you complain about this port, not sure what you would have said about SR1 then (it´s bad).

1) Again blocking does nothing. doging only works with mouse, which again, is the camera. And I shouldn't need to wrangle the camera every 5 seconds.
2) No. No it really doesn't. Every single time I use it I get flung around like I did nothing, often resulting them in chaining attacks that keep me pinned and unable to attack, again resulting in part of problem one.
3) I'm fine at doing puzzles. In fact, the first game was a cake walk. This one, not a clue, spent 20 minutes just trying to figure out a room and when it takes that long and getting nothing done, then I have better things to spend time on.
4) Then you are one of the lucky few apparently, and yes the other one was terrible. I went to an emulator to get through it. This one is no better in my eyes, the controlls in particular making it worse. Where as the other crashed more often.

I can play this game without issues on both keyboard+mouse and joypad so not sure what is the problem here.

Blocking as Ive said, reduces the damage you take from enemies. I don´t see what is the issue of self-controlled camera either. Dodging only works if you are engaged in combat and you can redefine the keys the way you want...

You get hit because you are being hit with charged attacks, which break block. I suggest you consult the manual. I´ve completed the game without any issues in 2001, without any guides or internet and can finish the game in 6,5h.

Combat is not a problem and neither are the puzzles, you really shouldn't complain that a game is bad just because you can't get to grips with the mechanics. I am having massive issues with getting it to run, though and as yet found no fix. Odd that SR1 should be mentioned as that worked perfectly for me.

Squigle: what issues exactly do you have? On Win7 there is issue with purplish menu, which can be fixed.

Might I also add that you are all acting like I don't know what I'm talking about with this game, so let me set you straight on this. I have beatten every game in this franchise aside from Blood Omen 1, and obviously Nosgoth has no "ending". I have played them all on the PS2 before this. I had little to no troubles there. Apparently these are in mass PC problems. And from what I have heard, in particular with this game, it was a rushed port that they didn't really rework the controls or anything like that with.
And I honestly don't recall having this much trouble on PS2 with these issues. However as it currently stands for me, the PC version is just plain and simple unplayble. You're better off finding a used PS2 and a copy of this game from a game/video store that carries these sorts of things.
But for an honest warning to new players that might want to get into this series Via PC. It must be said that it's not worth there money or there time when there are so many issues.
Also haven't tested Blood Omen 2 yet, but I just tested Defiance today, OMG Is it so much better. Other than a few lagg issues when the fighting gets close to camera, I can't belive the night and day change on the same system. Combat, fast and fluid. Puzzles, make far more sence, story and voice acting just as good as they have ever been. And I might even add, that it instantly dected my controller and set it up properly without me having to change a thing. If any of the PC Kain games are worth one's time, It's pretty much Defiance right now.

No, SR2 was not a rushed port by any means. They even ported the dynamic music system this time, unlike in SR1. I have this game on both pc and ps2 and it is the same. I dont get the talk about these non-existing issues...

Puzzles? Defiance does not have any puzzles, which require thinking and combat gets old super fast. Defiance is nowhere near good as SR2 imo which is not as good as SR1.

Sr1 was brutal on pc, I recently played through it and its pretty bad. Will give sr2 a shot when i'm done with shadowman, which I've been enjoying way more then sr1.

I agree with OP. I loved this game when I was younger. The dialogue seems a lot more pretentious to me nowadays than it did back then, of course, because it is pretentious. But the plot is still plenty interesting and the graphics and gameplay still hold up well... On the PS2 version. On the PC, however, I'm having major trouble trying to complete it without frisbeeing my laptop at the wall. The combat is ridiculous, it won't go one single fight without Raziel dodging past the enemy, swinging at some point behind it and refusing to autolock like the damn autolock function is supposed to facilitate, and DID facilitate on the PS2 version. The camera will also invariably wedge itself into the least helpful place during fights. Behind opaque shafts of light, through walls, spazzing out to a degree that causes me to get killed by enemies that I dispatched in matters of seconds on the PS2 version with zero loss of health. I'll also be running down a corridor or through the swamp or whatever and the camera will spaz out wildly, causing Raziel to do the same, I get turned around and lose all sense of direction. Swimming is strange as well. The camera will start to bob up and down and the bobbing will increase, slowly getting worse and worse until I'm actually getting seasick from a computer game. This actually causes Raziel to move up and down as well and it becomes near-impossible to aim him in the water on stop him from snapping on and off the surface repeatedly, getting him stuck in a loop of diving, bobbing up, diving, bobbing up etc. The controls are utter codswallop, as well. I've heard defenses on this thread but none of them do it for me, it's just arse. I have played older games with similar mechanics and better controls. One of the defining games of my childhood and I'm going to have to uninstall it. On the bright side, the compatibility issues didn't occur for me, so maybe there's been some fixes, I don't know.
Raina Audron, your actual display picture is of Raziel, so of course you're biased as ♥♥♥♥ and won't concede any part of this game being bad.

The puzzles are fine, though. I actually find it a bit insulting how quickly the game gives you hints like "Oh you're supposed to put the key in the keyhole WOW I NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT THANKS!"

♥♥♥♥, I forgot I posted this 4 years ago. About to do a Max Payne stream, in my pre stream right now. I did finally get a fix for the game. It's not perfect, but there is a Voodoo emulator out there, and that helped fix several bugs and made the controls slightly better, but still not great. I recall having to rekey just about everything. But I did finally beat the PC version about 2 years ago. So 2 years after this post, with constant searching on my own. This series really needs a face lift, either a new modern conversion or a full on remake. Just keep the previous sound/voice work. It's still great.
