How the ♥♥♥♥ do I save?

So I can't save in the pause menu. I played all the way to you swimming in the lake and you get to some sort of post. You make some comment about how if you are hurt, you will come back and be fine from that point on.

I think 'okay, its a checkpoint system'. So I quit, and when I come back, the only option on the main menu is to 'State New Game'. What am I doing wrong here? Do I have to beat it in one sitting or just leave the game running if I decide I want to stop playing? The last time I had to do that was when I owned an N64 withouth a memory card.

You are partly correct. The posts are checkpoints to respawn at if you die, but don't confuse this with an actual save point.
