This SR1Hook I keep reading about; I don't care about running the game at 60 FPS, because 30 is just fine for me. However, could that possibly fix the sound issue? If not, then I do have another question. Since I can't Shift+Tab to bring up the Steam Overlay to chat with my friends, I'm forced to Alt+Tab out of the game. Is it bad that I'm doing that?
I have seen many posts with people having issues with the sound on this game - and I was one of them. I tried numerous things suggested by others and none of them did the trick. Having recently managed to find some form of balance that "fixes" the issue (for me, at least), I thought I would share it here incase it worked for anyone else.
So, with the default Steam installation, I installed the Widescreen Mod (http://www.sendspace.com/file/b00fbz). This may or may not be relevant, but I thought it best I mentioned every modification I performed.
Secondly, I set the compatibility mode of the executable to "Windows Xp Service Pack 2". Any version of Windows less than that kept asking me for the CD when I started (which, of course, as a Steam installation, is utter rubbish).
Finally, when running the game, I set the video driver to "Software Mode" and turned off texture filtering. It may not look quite as pretty in-game after doing this - but it does make a big difference to the sound, in that it actually works!
Anyway, I hope this may prove useful. I don't know if this will work for everyone, but it cannot hurt to try. For myself, it means I can finally PLAY the game instead of messing around with restarts etc. whenever the sound plays up.
Worked like a charm! Thanks!
