Did Raziel grow wings on purpose?
I'm not sure the game ever addresses if Raziel grew his wings on purpose or if it was an accident. It would be worth mentioning, considering the whole storyline is about free will / fate - the story might have been triggered by a frakish accident in vampire biology.
If he did it on purpose, he's an idiot, he should have got some of his brtohers on his side before he decided to piss of Kain.

its a evolution it just happens but it sapose to happen hafter Kain becouse Kain is the one that made them. But the funny thing is the others Raziel brothers devole but also evole like being under water with out dying witch Kain does not have (sorry about the spelling). now on freewill, Raziel in up having fee will after Kain cast him in the vortex. the helden is the ones (i think) gave him the wings but did not forseen he was going to have freewill (in a nother time line i think, yes i think there are moltity time lines.)oh yes you don't or Raxiel has a saying in evolution, but a outside force like the helden can to a degree. ooch my brain herts.

I didnt know the Hilden were involved in Raziel's gaining wings. I know he gained free will after being cast to the vortex, I just wondered if the whole story was kicked off by Raziel on purpose (he grew wings and seriously miscalculated Kain's reaction) or by fate (or evolution or chance or whatever you choose). Do they really ever mentioned that the Hilden gave him the wings?

Did you guys watch the intro?

"A few years after the master, our evolution would soon follow. Until I had the honor of surpasing my lord."

or something like that.

Raziel was also the first of Kain's 'sons'
So for the most part. He gained the most of kain's 'gift'

I'm guessing Kain KNEW raziel was going to grow them before him. He might have potentially just been waiting for him to grow them. Afterwards, all that was needed was to launching into the abyss.

Hell, what's to say Kain wasn't taking a gamble. in the sense that Raziel MIGHT have come back as a Reaver of Souls. Potentially it might just wounded down to luck.

According to the intro, Kain gains new attributes before any other vampire, being the patriarch. However Raziel gained wings before Kain and , as the look on Kains face woukd reveal, his master did not like that one bit (it kind of puts the whole order of things into a bit of chaos). So, in anger/surprise/envy/power hungry stupor, he throws Raz into the pit.

Lets see, in Soul Reaver(1) we learn that the evolution is random. If you play through Soul Reaver 2 you learn more about the whole ordeal:
Spoilers ahead!
  • We learn that the mutations are not due to them being vampires, but it happens because Kain is corrupted.
  • Vampires were actually not human, but another being that relates to what we could think of as angels. They were cursed by an evil they banished through the pillars.
  • Kain did not throw Raziel into the pit because he had wings or mere jealousy, he did it because it was his their fate (which he constantly tries to change).
