If I had to go through Soul Reaver all over again I would probably do it on PS1/Dreamcast, but this time I'd rather try Dreamcast with "HD Texture Pack" because I have never had the opportunity to go through the first time with such graphics. However, the original textures from the dreamcast are not bad either (it depends if you prefer the original textures or the mod ones, it's a matter of taste)
When I play Soul Reaver PC, it's usually to check "Debug" out of boredom.
But I have completed game Soul Reaver PC for once back then.
I found video that have comparison with "Dreamcast & PC (Wrace Patch) & PS1", so you can always check out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVkaMvyxf3Y
Nevertheless, the PC and Dreamcast versions have advantages and disadvantages.
It also depends on what you care about the most.
There has been no talk of piracy in this thread until just now though, emulation and using a disc on it is not piracy(emulators allow the use of CD-Drives on PC). Emulation is legal, but distribution of ROMs is illegal(piracy), this has been proven multiple times in US courts. At least in my country, may vary on yours. Sony vs. Connectix court case is an example that solidified this, unless I download and redistribute game files or bios, which is a no no. They also have no authority for making the Dreamcast version illegal to play now whatsoever, I will still put it in my Dreamcast console(mine is actually broken) and play it if I wish, although their intellectual property, it is my physical property, not theirs, so I can make a giant earring out of it if I wanted to or use it as a freesbee, and then if it survives, play it all day and night, unless I distribute the files within it online(piracy), it belongs to me. Yep, I already own the game's physical copy of Dreamcast, which is what I will be using(as a game not freesbee), as it is my property purchased by Grandpa-Reimu decades ago. I also already own this PC version of the game on Steam, I own all Legacy of Kain games that are available on Steam, I specifically bought it because price was low and to support the company even though I may not play it, may have been from a bundle. But I would rather play a definitive-version if possible rather than a sub-par version(buggy) for my nostalgia shot, not that this version is bad at all from what I have been told, it just has some issues, unfortunately too many games get ported relying on nostalgia and end up in terrible condition, the fact that several of these Legacy of Kain games need patches to even work often, is evidence of that.
Still, with fan-made fixes you really do make a good case for the Enhanced update, that's all awesome, I Think will actually still play it here after fixing, and compare them myself, I fudging love when people mod games like art restoration, shows how people still love the game. I think you changed my mind in which one to play.
Dreamcast > PS1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> [...]² PC, even "enhanced".
But yeah because we have to live & die by the Law, only PC version matters, sure...
But the PC version has subtitles and I like the achievements added to the enhanced PC version, and the much needed map image. The enhanced version is really what makes the PC version good in my opinion, but it can only work with what it was given with the Steam port I think.
If Dreamcast had the same PS1 music feature then it would be a complete replacement without any mods.
