Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

Don't play this version.
30 fps, and fog everywhere. This is a direct port of the PS1 version. If you already bought this, take no shame in making use of your sealegs and downloading a Dreamcast emulator, Square Enix already took your money for this travesty of a port. The Dreamcast version runs at a 60 fps, and there is no fog limiting your vision, so you can see entire rooms in all their glory.

Demul is my emulator choice, and it takes a bit of tinkering, but it's definately worth it to play the definitive version of Legacy of Kain, which is available nowhere else.

Agreed, demul does a great job and you´ll also get dynamic music with it. I still kinda prefer the ps1 version, it has its charm for me.

Wrace: We have not shown any combat yet and if you call jump from 1000 polygons to 10000+ just a slight improvement, then you might need to check your eye sight.

This is all I needed to hear. Never considered looking into Dreamcast. I've been playing the PSX version since buying the PC version not possible right now. I grabbed the other 4 games dirt cheap since there are fan patches for getting them running smooth.

I've recently purchased Dreamcast, and by the chance it happen to be the first game I've launched on it. Didn't expect much, I've played both PC and PSOne version. Boy oh boy the improvements are huge. It doesn't run at stable 60, more like the framerate is unlocked - but it's way more responsive then PSOne. The graphics are overall better, both level geometry and main character; I've even noticed some additional small details - the rocks and other objects you can pick up and throw into enemies.

Now I wonder, how things are for the other multiplatform games released for Dreamcast. I used to think they are mostly straight ports with no major improvements - just higher resolution and more stable framerate. I've heard that the best version of Rayman 2 by far is on the Dreamcast as well.

Now I want to check Resident Evil 2 and 3 and Tomb Raider 4. Maybe Urban Chaos? Would've been neat to see it with better graphics running at 60 FPS. And Rayman 2 of course.

RE2 and RE3 are generally better on Dreamcast, but Gamecube does beat it in some areas.

Although nowadays, its easy to just patch the PC versions.

Dreamcast (and Saturn) were plagued by poor planning and management. Anyone that was lucky enough to buy them (myself included) will tell you that they are both great systems despite the poor support.

I'm fine with 30 FPS, and Square Enix never made the port in the first place. Only gripes I have is the lack of dynamic music, and the bug at Dumah's Keep that crashes your game. Never emulated Dreamcast before, and hardly see any reason to, other than to maybe see how other ports differ. Also don't like multi-track .bin files, but that's just me.

I'v owned this game for well over 10 years now on steam and it still gives me an error saying I am missing some sorta file and it wont start the game. I have tried to reach out to steam, I have tried the community, and nothing seems to help.

I own the PS1 game but hearing that emulating it for dreamcast is a thing, I may have to look into emulators again. I do own a steam deck.. i just got lazy at following instructions.
