The golden cubes part is pretty straight-forward and will probably bore some players. It's when you start hunting for anti cubes that the game really shines. You will have to pick up clues from the environment on how to solve certain puzzles or decipher elements and if you are successful you will feel very smart.
I'd say find 32 cubes and complete the game once before you ditch it entirely. If you like it by then, go ahead and try to 100% the game (actually 209.4%). You most likely won't regret it.
Don't look at it yet, but if you ever get stuck and need guidance, check this spoiler-free "hint" guide out: http://www.gamespot.com/features/the-secrets-of-fez-6372274/
Sounds like the best part of the game might be a little over my head. I don't think I've solved ANY of the puzzles yet...most of the time I can't even tell that something is actually a puzzle.
On your advice, I'll keep playing to collect the cubes because I still find the game interesting.
