Why is Jagex allowed to do this?
I think we should get steam to crack down on developers just abandoning games people paid for. Jagex is putting Runescape on steam. So they have no problem taking money but when it comes to support they wont.

Abandoning games that people paid for is not illegal sadly

All online games come to an end... this is nothing new. Once its not profitable it gets shut down.

I'm not watching the video as it's 1 hour, but if it was then there wouldn't be so many games that are abandoned and not being worked on, you can't do anything about it

This isn't true and you are making excuses for corporate greed, ignorance, and cowardice. Online games absolutely do not have to come to an end. There are numerous ethical ways to handle a sunset that preserves the game and people's ability to play it.

- Anarchy Online has been formally placed in maintenance mode, with a skeleton crew of former players watching over it.

- The Microsoft game Alliance was put into the hands of a player run organization and remains playable to this day.

- Microsoft sold Asheron's Call back to its developer, a mistake resulting in both games eventually being shut down.

- Meridian 59, often called the first MMO and fully a quarter century old, was turned over to a group of its original developers and released as freeware. It can be played on Steam.

- Subspace, also turning 25 years old this year, is run by players and available on Steam.

- After servers closed, EA gave its blessing for Earth & Beyond players to do what they must to keep the game running.

- Ryzom is now under community development, with the bulk of it available under a creative commons licenses.

- Oh, and a little game you might have heard of - called Ace of Spades - is still alive and well under the name Build and Shoot.

Build and Shoot isn't exactly the same as AoS recently was though

I mean, they literally stated this:

"After giving the codebase a full review and examining the detail of making the game available opensource we’ve concluded that, due to potential technical, legal and licensing implications, its not possible to do this and thus we will close the servers on Wednesday 6th March at 12pm GMT."

Besides. Jagex bought the game when it was practically dead already, and they then still kept the servers running for multiple years with a super minimal playerbase.

As sad as it is, at one point a game will just get shutdown if there's barely any players left. Running servers isn't free, and for some projects like the original Runescape Jagex still has servers running.

they could have released the source code and allowed players to host their own servers

But they don't gain anything from that, and they are a selfish company

Well, they'd gain PR.
