Convert dirt to grass

Hi there,

It's been more than 1 year since my dirst hasn't convert to grass. I've got torches covering all the area day and night.

Am I missing something or I just should be more patient?

In order to grow grass you must follow these steps.

1. The dirt blocks are connected to other grass blocks.

2. There is nothing above the dirt blocks you with to grow grass on. You cannot grow grass in caves or under other blocks.

3. Most of the time, you will have to replace the dirt floor tiles to jumpstart the process. Replace all of the dirt tiles and wait for about 1 in-game day, if it does not start, replace them again. Eventually replacing them will get the process going.

Grass does not grow in winter as well, so if you happen to replace grass by dirt in winter, remove a farm etc it will not grow back again unless you replace the tiles the next spring or later. Currently grass seems to be bugged (well this bug has been since the beginning). Grass grows fairly quickly since some update ago, but when it does not grow it will not grow. It also does not grow under objects nor under groves or other designations.

I give it a few days to see if grass grows. If not, I replace the dirt as Haidr'Gna suggested.

This worked for me, too :D Thank you! I had extended my fortress and the grass wouldn't grow :( Just had to replace the dirt again.

The grass should start growing right away (3 hours time).
Replacing again WILL fix it 75% of the time, if not, replace again.
Best to do this in the morning.
Don't replace grass when it's not daylight, or when it IS winter time, or it will never grow.
Soil put down in winter will never grow grass. <this is a bug, but it happens>
