Hard limit was removed, but I think you won't get over 50 that easily.

Does the population depend only on the worth of the kingdom? Or also on the time that has passed?

More gnomands at early times, degreases over time and/or as KW rises. Great Hall is the most important thing to have.

So basically you get more gnomes faster in the beginning, but it gets harder to get them as you make your great hall worth more?

Up until now the only special building I have done is for the great hall. I guess if personal quarters and dorms, etc are also nice and valuable, that will have a major impact.

Yea, I'm just curious, my Kingdom worth has grown from 10,000 to 18,000 over 3 seasons and I am still at 17 dwarves. The main hall has doubled as well, 4K to 8.5K.

I've started upgrading bedrooms since they also have a "worth" value in their info panels

Second Question s there a pop limit for Yaks? I've saved up plenty food, so I forgot to watch them, and I noticed a yak at depth -16 running about... as I went up floor by floor I counted more than a dozen. So right outside my city gate, I built a huge Pasture and they gathered 30 of them from my fort.

On the plus side when they get cornered they help fight off goblins.

In some other topic, one person linked a document wher the numbers were listed.
The list went up to 101 gnomes.
But to get that many, you need to have 2.5 million or so...

Just a little maths here:
Your building-projects will raise your KW in a kind of Linear function (with spikes here and there but on average it will be a linear function)
The number of gnomes you get, is an exponential function.
So it gets harder and harder to get a new guy.

@Yaks:
The Number of yaks will raise exponentialy as well. probably till your processor melts.
In my first game, i had about two hundred of them.
Thats why its bad to have more than 2m+6f yaks or 2 pastures/7x6 and not having more ranchers to bucther them.
Also: Click on your Butcher-Workshop>"Overview">check the box for "automaticaly butcher lifestock"
That will keep the numbers down.
