I assume it has something to do with pathfinding and sheduling (i.e., how near a free wheelbarrow is to a gnome and whether or not other gnomes use the wheelbarrows during the time that the taskplanning for a gnome takes place
(with other words, lets assume during the time that one gnome plans a task and finishes it [i.e. pathfinding and so on] all wheelbarrows are in use ... but then, half a second after he finishes his planning, a wheelbarrow is free ... in this case the gnome won´t use this free wheelbarrow, even if it located directly on the path the gnome takes to the goods he has to transport))
I always have a few small stockpiles with high priority for wheelbarrows near the stockpiles and areas where stuff is generated, this way a wheelbarrow is always available and they bring it back there after use, looks a bit like carts in the supermarket is setup this way.
1. Stone needs hauling.
2. Gnome Grabby is allocated to haul that stone.
3. Currently no available wheelbarrows, haul stone by hand.
That command is now set in stone and unchangable, even if a wheelbarrow becomes available before Grabby actually gets to the task on his list of things to do.
But the game is still technically in development so perhaps at a later date a more adaptive AI will be implemented in which Gnomes will check certain factors before starting their next task, such as if a wheelbarrow is available for use.
But later on in the game one can designate gnomes to be solely haulers while other gnomes do no hauling at all. When there are a lot more gnomes, this can be an effective method of ensuring stuff gets put away while other tasks still get done. The number of wheelbarrows would then not need to be higher than the number of gnomes, but just the number of haulers.
Well, they use their wheelbarrow as a weapon in combat if they are equipped with one when the combat takes place.
Someone who can wield a wheelbarrow also won´t have a problem moving it up (or down) several flights of stairs :D
gnomes use anything as a wep, one of my gnomes (a old bug) dropped his wep for a sandwitch (to eat), and was then needed in combat, he done very well killing blow on a orge with it :) and of course one time a gobln knocked down a door and wacked a gnome around the head with it :)
My personal favourite was when a couple of my gnomes got cornered in the dormitory. One got decapitated and the other used the head to beat back the goblin.
