Any use in stocking different wood types?
Hey guys!

Other than for aesthetics, is there any use in growing pine trees instead of, say, birch trees (which yield a higher value)? Do they grow faster?

On a similar note; is there any use in growing both apple and orange trees? Or are they identical in everything but appearance?

Same goes for strawberries / grapes - any actual difference?

I assume there's no practical distinctions between the variations, but I don't trust the wiki completely.

The wood types all carry slightly different values. I believe Birch Furniture has a slightly higher value, while Pine has slightly lower value. I believe Orange and Apple wood may be on par with each other.

Fruit doesn't matter any. Value doesn't change, and they offer the same nourishment value when eaten or turned into Wine. Not sure if Grapes have any different growing times, but I believe they're mostly for having a more diverse food production to help you control and know what your Gnomes make.

I usually use Pine to make coal ... and for furniture where worth doesn´t matter (like barrels, crates or wooden parts for weapons), whereas I reserve my other types of wood for furniture that goes into dining rooms / great hall and personal quarters.
Is also reflected in me having a pine-only stockpile at the furnace

Thanks for the answers!
So when designating groves, the only point in growing pine would be to keep my kingdom worth low?

Pine will help your Kingdom Worth stay a tiny fraction lower. (it adds up, but per piece, the difference is small.) It's also mostly just for asthetics.

Currently all these types are not too significantly different (other than making birch-based furniture for a few more points worth) so I have reduced my groves and fields to just the following:

Apple or orange, but not both. Just depends on what is near my drink crafting station, since for time's sake, I usually like to create groves in areas that are partially growing the desired tree already

Birch only

No strawberries or grapes

Occasionally mushrooms but not a priority if I don't have an easy underground water access. I usually do this in year 2 or 3 when my farmer gnomes have become so fast at farming that they can easily handle more work, as well as having high supply of wheat available for all the animals already.

Pine tree groves are good for using logs with the 'furnace' workshop to make coal to keep the metal shops going. You DO NOT want to run out of coal. DO NOT run out of coal. Mines are dark, and torches NEED coal to be created. Monsters love dark. Monsters ALSO love gnomes for DINNER. heh

Something very important that is being forgotten is the suggested future update. The developer is thinking of putting in a "favorites" for gnomes, such as they have a favorite food or drink so they will pick a certain fruit or flavor of wine (or beer instead). Extra happiness if they have their favorite, penalty if only their "dislike" is available. Hell, they may even create an allergy in which having only one type of drink can kill a gnome.

Forward-thinking, might be a good idea to grow as much of a variety as possible just to be safe (is it really that much work for you?). Just throw all your pine into coal and use birch for your furniture, that way coal doesn't hit your furniture stock. Or make a single fruit on "repeat" for making wine.
