Feed the Gnomes (Farming Questions)
So I just ran through about a year on a tiny map. I thought I was doing great but then Winter hit. First the Yaks and Alpacas had to go as I ran out of straw for them. Then I started running really low on food and drink. I thought with the coming of spring things would pick up but the pace at which my gnomes were eating all the food and drinking everything in sight was beyond what little showed up come spring.

Anyone got any good tips on farming? How many plots per farmer, different types of crops, how many farmers per gnome, that sorta thing?

First off start your farms immediately when you start a play through. Wheat comes first no arguement they feed your gnomes and feed your yak.

There is no perfect ration. It depends on your gnomes skill level and the season. When you get the hang of making professions effectively you can have it so you have 2 dedicated, then divide your "idle friendly" gnomes like builders between farming and hauling. Generally though 2 dedicated farmers can easily support your first year gnomes, and with your part time helpers you could stretch into the high teens in population without an issue.

One playthrough I had 2 dedicated farmers(first year farmers) out of 25 gnomes.....Another one i focused more idle gnomes on other things and needed 3 for 24.

Huh. I've got a ton of farms, Wheat, and Strawberry are particularly large. Plus I have fruit groves and even a moderate sized Grape farm and I think I have 5ish part time farmers? I still ran out of food?

Do you have a kitchen? Wheat can't be consumed by itself. strawberries slow down during the later seasons like fall. I think but am not 100 percent sure that grapes grow faster during the fall. Its been awhile since ive bothered with them.

Yes, I have one of just about every workshop. Kitchen and Distillery are located next to my food stockpile. It's not a case of "I can't turn things into food" it's more a lack of anything to turn into food.

And I read a guide somewhere which recommended a tiny map, walling off the outside for newbs so you could control who you wanted to fight. Does the map size and/or something else reduce farm fertility or something?

no it doesnt. it just limits your workable space. Tiny maps are fine, worst case scenario you build a sky farm but placing dirt flooring above one of your old ones, but that shouldnt be an issue specially not in first year.

basically each gnome when assigned to a task will eat a little less than 2 poor quality bread a day. Or a little more than 2 reg quality fruit. How many gnomes do you have?

Yeah the major issue is your plot sized. You can have all the farmers you want. but if the work can be done by 2 gnomes it doesnt matter.

expand your crops. Simple as that.

With those plot sizes your not making much more than your break even point. Nothing to put back for the winter. You have 156 plots of food. and your gnomes eat 34 of that a day.

I seem to recall (might be a tad mistaken on this, just from memory) that you need about 12 wheat plots / yak. This included tilling time and wintertime.
