mob spawn rules
what are the mob spawn rules? i see that random goblins and wildlife dont spawn within the walls of my community, beyond that i'm not sure. looking for things like light level, proximity to gnomes, depth, floor material etc

Goblins, Animals, and the Ogres that ally with Goblins all invade based on time intervals that you can adjust in the advanced map settings. Light does not affect their spawning, and they always spawn at the edges of the map. Their Strength and Numbers, including Gear and what tier of Ogres you face, are all based on your Kingdom Worth.

Underground however, there is no time interval, and Kingdom Worth has no weight. Monsters spawn when you dig underground and leave darkness in the caves. Their Strength and Numbers depends on how deep, and how much darkness/room you have underground for them to spawn.

so if i block all my old mine shafts and light as much as possible underground it will minimize mob spawn there?

also you can either wall in your map or do what i do on a huge map and dig a moat all around the map 15 squares in from the edges, too keep your gnomes safe.

there are a few disscussions that state mining a 13x13 square and place a torch in the center, at/on stairs and fillin any/all shafts you find helps minimze the spawns under ground.
The torches can light a radius of 10 tiles from any point. So roughly 17x17 rooms will do fine... Be aware if you wall off old mineshafts, and you go within 16 squares of the unlit area, it can cause things to spawn in the dark areas, and cause lag or momentary hangs and cause the game to get this kind of stop-go performance about it. Especially if beetles are enabled, this is very bad. Try to keep everything lit as you go. If you do go and discover areas even if they are not discovered and say you go within 16 tiles of a hidden cave monsters can still spawn in there. Be aware. Always save often when digging incase you need to bail with alt-f4 (unless you're the type that doesn't believe in that).

Also since it was not mentionet yet...underground monsters start spawning at -8 and below. Mining up to -7 is safe. Supposedly lighting everything up, underground and above, helps with lag later in game. Something to do with gnomes pathing in dark areas and lighting them up...
