gnomes automatically chase all animals (usually to their death)

is there anyway to turn off auto attack? ive lost way too many gnomes to them chasing after a lizard or a bear and getting wrecked by it...

Put them into a squad and set it to avoid enemies. It should work most of the time unless they bump into an animal.

You need to turn off the option of defend gnomes as well or they will attack anything a non-military gnome spots.
