Unarmed gnomes are pretty much bad-a**?

I know it's not recommended to send gnomes to fight tough enemies (ie. orges, bears, armored goblins) into battle but I'm quite surprise to see my naked gnomes, fighting unarmed and ended up getting most of the kills (kill-steal?), just like dual wielders. Is it because by fighting unarmed, he has higher attack speed = good chance to land either a finishing blow or injury deal to enemies?

I do know that unarmed attacks deal low dmg, but seriously Farmer John karate kick a bear's throat and the bear died (with the help of his fellow gnome knights, of course)

But if you are really sending out naked gnomes to battle, it is highly recommended to send armored gnomes to first engage the enemy. Can't expect to risk losing a limb or a head.
