Sleeping soldiers
This is really bothering for me. Almost every time the goblins' decides to attack my settlement at least one of my soldiers are sleeping. In such a moment I really want to have an abillity to wake up the sleeping gnome because of (crisis). It's so annoying to loose something in a small raid because somebody is sleeping and refusing to wake up ._.'

Place an Alarm Bell nearby. You'll need someone with the skill to turn it on and off to be awake and nearby for that to really help. I forget which skill it is...

Give all your gnomes the Mechanic skill and place down an Alarm Bell close to where gnomes would generally congregate. Ringing the bell will wake up all gnomes in the fort and they'll stay out of bed until you silence the bell again. You can place more than one bell if it makes sense for the layout of your fort.

as already said: Alarm bell.
Will cause all gnomes to wake up, all gnomes in military squads will follow attack-orders all other gnomes will gather in the great hall.
Remeber: your civil-gnomes won't do ♥♥♥♥ exept hiding in the great hall during an alarm, you need someone with mechanics in a military squad do turn the alarm off.

You can also put all your gnomes in a malitia and give them some cheap, basic equipment. It's not as good in the late game, but early game I find it cuts down on losses due to gnomes mandering about outside the fort or your regulars being asleep when the goblins are sneaking up on you.

P.S. if you train your malitia alongside your regulars, you may find your civil-gnomes lopping off as many limbs as your highly trained/equipped soldiers. This comes at a cost though...

I tend to give my militias from the early game a flintlock pistole in lategame...along with all other none-soldier gnomes.
They tend to rush into combat to haul stuff anyway, but that way they will add additional damage to the fight instead of rushing and getting killed.
