Gnomoria

Gnomoria

Game font is unreadable at high resolution.
Just wanted to give this game another try, and was trying to read some screens and current font just hurt my eyes trying to discern letters. Please consider an option to change ingame fonts.

I'm starting to believe that it's less an issue with font, and rather people using monitors or TVs with lower pixel density. Especially when someone mentions "HDMI", more often than not the imagery I see from HDMI setups, usually TVs, has a very poor pixel density, making the image blury, and making finer details hard to see.

If I use my old TV that I use for my consoles, Yes, Gnomoria is blurry and hard to read. However on both my Laptop and Gaming PC, with Monitors that have much higher pixel density, everything is crystal clear and easy to read.

So either you have eye problems which should be adressed on the official forums and ask for more font options to the Developer directly, or you're using very low quality monitors.

Also, don't bring up price tags. I've seen $6000 "HD" TV's that have just as much clarity as my old TV does.

Like i've said before, bring it up on the official forums if it's an issue. Maybe we can get some font options to keep everyone happy.

Other than that, all I can say otherwise is to try different monitors. See if anyone you know has one you can try out and see if there's a difference. Maybe go out and buy a new one, paying attention to pixel density and other features. Resolution isn't the only important factor. Your Monitor could be capable of 4k for all that it matters, and still give you a blurry image.

While I agree with you, it just simply isn't correct in this scenario. I ruled out the projector because it is over HDMI tho funny enough I'm sitting here writing this post on that with small Steam font and have no issue. Have no issue with dozens of other games.

That said, to rule that out as a projector != a high quality monitor generally, I went with my Dell UltraSharp U3011. It's a well-rated IPS panel that I use for my business work [I'm a professional photographer] so color accuracy and sharpness are very important for me. I have a Dell UltraSharp U2410 sitting next to it as well. Both are DVI. The 3011 is dual-link DVI specifically to drive the large monitor. Is it an Eizo or a high-end NEC? No, but it's not a slouch either. It's definatley an issue with the devs choice of "font" for the game I can assure you.

So using monitors only:

Dell U3011 IPS
0.2505 mm dot pitch

Dell U2410 IPS
0.27 mm dot pitch

Both numbers per Dell spec sheets.

Geforce 460 on the "office" computer with the monitors. DVI connections for both as noted. Native refresh. Native resolution. Dell drivers and profiles loaded for both monitors, current nVidia drivers loaded for the video card.

Using native resolutions on both monitors the font burns my eyes. If I drop the resolution down to something stupidly low it looks "better" but not great. So again, it doesn't seem to scale well which matches what every single person on this thread has reported.

Just rattling off some text-heavy games that looks just fine... SimCity, Diablo 3, Torchlight 2, Craft the World,

Either that or we all have junk setups and are visually impaired. ;)

We're nitpicking at this point. This isn't entirely a quantitative thing.

You seem really offended at this post in general. Is this your font that people are picking on?
lPaladinl Jul 15, 2014 @ 6:17pm
So what do you propose is the issue, if at least half of the people playing experience no problems playing the game with the font being readable, and the others claim that it's unreadable?

And of course it isn't my font and I am not offended. I have however seen this question come up before, and still cannot find any answers to it. All I can propose is to take it to the Devs and ask for a new option to replace the font.

I have even taken screenshots of the game on all resolutions available to me, and people with the issue of it being unreadable, still claim it to be unreadable, when on my end it is entirely clear and perfectly fine. The only conclusions I am able to draw is either poor hardware or personal issues with the user. There's no reason a Screenshot should look different on your machine than from mine, other than if your setup is somehow producing a more blurry image than my machine is.

I also have no issues on both of my current machines, a 17 inch laptop, and a 23.6 inch desktop monitor.

Dunno man. It's been posted on the official forum but no reply.

You're absolutely correct, the screenshot should look really about identical.

This is the one complaint I have about this game, the font is readable to me however it is not as clear as most other games and I can see where people would have some issues especially depending on their monitor and eyesight. We need a few options for font to make it more readable(bigger size, a few other font types) and that is pretty obvious by how often this topic pops up from time to time. I mean sometimes when looking at certain text it blends together and is hard to read.

main problem with the font is that it uses uneven letter elements width, for example "h" has first vertical bar thick, but second vertical bar is thin, and this really looks hurtful to my eyes.

Yep a good example of this issue that I could see bothering some people.

I play on a 28" monitor with a 22.6 inch next to it. If I play on the smaller of the two (both 1920x1080) I can hardly read anything.
I bought the larger one specifically for EvE which has the same (or very similar) issue

On my screen, 1920x1080, it looks fine.
The font is ugly (hate uneven thickness), but sharp and readable.
I run the game in borderless mode at full screen resolution.

I was testing some resolutions, and how downscaling works in this game.
I forced this through the nvidia settings.
To get a resolution of 3200 x 1800 (16:9).
When I did this on my 1920x1080 monitor, the fonts did get less readable but they stayed the same size, so the game has some kind of scaling font.

I think the people with issues have monitors that are not in native resolution or monitors that seem to downscale 1920x1080 to a lower resolution.

Well why does it look normal on my 1920x1080 monitor then, font is sharp, no problems reading.

It is definetely a problem with certain monitors or settings, as other users also say they don't have issues with the font.

Also the above I posted is suggestion to look into, if you wan't to try get it fixed, instead of pointing at the font that is used.

Your eyes are working better.

And lets be real objective now. Does the font never tire your eyes? Is it always easy to read? Is it of the same quality as the other games you play?

I play at 1920x1080. Played for about 10 hours straight last weekend and my eyes were fine. Probably going to play for another 10 today, and I guarantee my eyes will still be fine...

As has been said before... lets repeat it again: yes better hardware and certain settings do help. I played around with the nvidia settings and got a minor improvement.

However i cannot upgrade my eyes. Which i think is the biggest factor that makes the font look alright for some and horrible for others.

You might want to look into glasses. Your eyesight is subpar.

Like I said, you need glasses. The game runs fine at 1920x1080. It's something with your eyes, or machine, not the game.

I dont get why there is so much hate from people who think it is fine. It's a legit problem for some folks. If it isn't a legit problem for YOU... who cares?

It's not a hardware issue. After I posted by hardware the "your hw sucks" critics shut up. I have perfect vision. It's just this particular font. I'm writing this post sitting 15' away from a projector screen using Steam in it's default PC mode on a1080P projector so... ya.

For my testing to be fair I did it all with high-quality Dell UltraSharp IPS panel monitors which are probably better than what 95% of the folks on this thread have.

I play a lot of text-heavy games and they all look fine. Banished [LOTS OF TEXT], Torchlight 2, Diablo 3, Starbound, Terraria, etc etc. It's just this game's font.

But hey if it makes you feel better being a douche on the Internet telling people who clearly have a problem with the font in a game that they suck, their comp sucks, and they are actually in fact blind... more power to you.
