They are..well...robotic gnomes.
do not eat, do not drink, do not sleep, but need coal to keep running.
Everytime you kill a golem, there is a chance that they drop a golem core, you need these and a lot of tinkering to build gnome-bots from armorplates.
These gnome-bot are like artificial gnomes and can be used to do work that you want to be done without the worker taking breaks.
Or you can use them for combat, since they do not "die" they just get torn appart and need to be rebuild. but a destroyed gnome-bot will always drop it's core and can be rebuild with new armorplates. But...wel...repairing them after combat will cost you metal every time.
