Report a translation problem
The bone comment is spot on if you got the parts make up helms and shirts. Wiki shows bone helms = leather helms so its a good keeper. I end up with all non-military gnomes in full leather and all military in full metal.
Arryus list is spot on for the quaility of armor.
This. The starting gear is enough to have one gnome kick the crap out of some base goblins... usually. :)
Miner and woodcutter would have better weapon skills too.

No they aren't. You are better off giving them a stone weapon than make them rely on their worktools.
Because Lead is very heavy, which makes it an ideal blunt instrument. And it being "soft" doesn't matter if its a solid bar. You can bludgeon someone to death with a gold bar easily, without the goldbar deforming.
