Also, if the game ends up too difficult for them, you can go to Settings > Game > Difficulty and change it to 'Easy' to make it easier to complete. There's also a local co-op mode if you or someone else wants to play with them.
For my kids, I would have said yes when they were younger, but I would educate them and remind them not to lose their cool if they can't get octodad to go somewhere.
(The big boss at the end is a bit difficult, as well as a few other areas) That would be my primary concern for my kids. The aggravation it can cause.. lol.. My kids are educated in safety so no worries there. They knew not to touch certain types of things when they were younger and in public they did not grab everything in sight. I also remind them if it's making them angry, then it's not fun, which is contrary to the point of playing... ^.^
I agree with "easy mode" (and not timed is good) & the "cartoon violence". There's a positive message later on in the game about that at least.. :)
My final answer: I think it should be fine :) I hope that helped, when combined with the other answers. I didn't have much different I could say.
I had some exposure.. Made me see things differently.. Maybe it's why I try to protect my kids so when they are adults, they can get their own view of it if they choose. I just don't want to condition them to it.. ^.^
