Help with Shark chase?

Is this a timing thing? Or is there some way to get past this easily that I am missing? Any help would be much appreciated at this point.

You should hold down until he is charged/blinks. When you let go, you should immediately press again to start charging.

Alternatively, you can go to Settings > Game and change to 'Easy' and he will swim slightly faster.
