Rebooted and now the game works. No physx installed.
But it needed some cleaning apparently.
Just try and uninstall it and run the game.
Hey Chili - did you try removing physx - see n/a's post #6 above?
This issue is caused by physx having really weird compatibility issues from time to time. It used to be that installing Dishonoured before installing Contrast would break Contrast - it took us FOREVER to figure out why it was happening, because having installed a previous game is not usually the reason why your game crashes. And it only happened with Dishonoured. It was super weird.
So, if you guys are still having crashes while starting in safe mode, please try removing physx on your system and reinstalling Contrast.

Mine too. I'm trying to read through all of the suggested solutions in this forum, but a lot of them don't seem relevant to my set-up. For example, uninstalling PhysX seems popular but I don't actually have that installed in the first place. I'm really sad, because I've been looking forwards to trying this game and so grabbed it in the specials and... yeah. It won't even start. No error messages or anything, just nada.
I'm trying re-installing it and, fingers-crossed, maybe that will do something... :(
I couldn't even find PhysX on my computer until now because I didn't realise it was hidden inside a Nvidia folder on the other Program Files part. I'll get someone who knows more about this stuff to look into it for me - thanks for the help.
We tried this - my partner actually knows what they he is doing, unlike me - to no avail. It still won't work. Such a shame, since I've never had problems with a Steam game before.
