Folk Tale

What games are similar to this? Fantasy city-building?
I apologize if this has been asked--I did look, but it's like searching through a haystack.

I know this game has been compared to certain games, but most of the games I've seen are more RTS than Sim (e.g., Majesty, whose difficulty I'm also not a fan of), or aren't pure fantasy (e.g., Anno).

So...ARE there any "fantasy SimCity" games? Persistent city building, not just building toward combat. I'm aware of some of the older games, like Zeus, but honestly the graphics just don't do it for me.

Given the proliferation of these types of games on ios, I'm surprised!

Thanks!

Honestly, combat is a central element, so to certain degree they all go towards combat.

But fantasy SimCity are for example all Annos; Stronghold (The "Legend" actually has fantasy elements in") Spellforce (to some degree); The Nations (very much); Seven Kingdoms (although fairly low); The newer Settlers (6 & 7). I would call them "World fantasy SimCity"

then there are pure fantasy SimCity games like, as you mentioned, Zeus. There is of course Banished, Rome 1-3; Pharao and Children of Nile and a lot of other Rome building games. But these concentrate fairly on a city building map, while the first category is of games that are locate in a world of adventuring.

However the really big news is on FolkTale that it combines a good simulating city building with a huge world (as you got several maps to play on all in one single game.

Just because of this feature I would say that FolkTale will bring this shattered genre to the next level.

Maybe why do I say "shattered"....
Simply because the big studios have stopped producing any new RTS/City Building titles.

We depend solely on indie studios like GamesFoundy (and others..).

So thanks GamesFoundry. :-)

I can't seem to find "Rome"...
OnkelJorsch 2015 年 1 月 29 日 上午 12:45
definitely. If you draw the border between medieval and fantasy very close, then yes; Anno is not a fantasy game.
Actually, I cannot remember any fantasy city building game, at least not one that has been published within the last 15 years.

About Rome, you may find it when looking for Pharao and Zeus, as it is the predessor of them.

Maybe try also Tropico (the one of the series where you are in the pirate age). That has atleast the medieval style in it. :-)
and of course:
Cultures
(very similar to Settler 3-4 and
The Wiggles
(a fantasy game where you have some gnomes digging into a mountain and builing their homes. Very unknown game and hard to find, but try your best.)

Thanks for all the guidance. I actually don't think there exists a modern game that perfectly fits what I'm looking for* but these are all helpful.

* Persistent high-fantasy city/world building with no or optional combat, difficulty set by option or by mission. Set it up, sit back and observe, nudge your citizens here and there. Like a videogame version of sea monkeys ;)

No there is nothing at all like this.

You need to wait for all those lovely Early Access games to be finished.

Maybe you can also try Stonehearth on http://stonehearth.net/ , it is a lovely Voxel Fantasy city/worldbuilder but will surely stay in EA for another year.

There is a game that has just been Greenlit called Lethis.
This is a steampunk/city builder that looks quite funky...but there isnt that much info on it atm

Also CaesarIA is a ftp on steam where the devs are trying to bring Caesar 3 up to modern day with graphics and such

original poster was asking for finished games titles:

its not really helping adding links to an early acces mod (practically its a total reconversion for Caesar 3 not sure about the engine used) the studio will not be able to ask money for it, if it doesnt have the rights to the franchise, just a suing waiting to happen in my humble opinion.

Fair enough matey....was just trying to help a bit...have removed link.
Not sure myself about the licence issue to Caesar, although i would have thought Steam wouldnt allow it on here if it was breaking copyright....then again maybe they would :)

The Settlers: Rise of an Empire is the best and there are hundreds of fan mad maps for it .

The Guild 2 is far more a fantasy Sims family/building thing and far from this game. The Guild 2 is more about 1 family trying to conquer all..it is political to a point. So, to me (A big fan of The Guild 2 --The Guild 3 is suppose to be in the making--) this is nothing like this game.

Age of Mythology is something like this with battle and it is based on well mythlogy.

Black And White (o.o old game)... is fantasy/w battle.

I can't remember anymore (shame I know there are some but this old mind refuses to cough up names...)...

I am waiting for a fantasy that has a just build game (Banished is more humanized and not even fantasy...XD they even hoard stuff)...with the choice to battle...seems that if games don't have battle or multiplayer this generation won't play...

Lol...Sometimes I want to battle and sometimes I want to build...sometimes both.

Banished isn't fantasy. It's not even that unrealistic to be able to be considered fantasy, and it's more of a survival game than a "city builder".

You can find it if you search for "the diggles". It was fun from what I remember of it, but I also remember it being quite buggy.

Closest modern game to the diggles would be gnomoria, but if you don't mind a slightly above-average learning curve and a 2d visual representation of the game world, dwarf fortress is a million times better - and it's free.

B&W was amazing. One of my all-time favorite games, if not the.
It's a shame there'll never be a continuation of the series.

I recently picked up Hearthlands for like $0.50. (It was in a indy gala bundle not long ago). Pretty sweet so far I really enjoy it.
Still keeping an eye on this one.
