Too many beds! A bed should be a service (like a toilet)
Beds take up 50% of the base and are empty all the time. Why?
Also, moving production requires reassigning beds. This is microcontrol. This is not cool!
Maybe you need to be more original, and not repeat cliches?
Beds should be a service (like a toilet). Citizens should rent them. If this is a game about capitalism, then the bed should be paid. And this is more original, fits into the concept of the game

You can set beds to be auto assigned and the nearest tired rat will assign themselves to them. Bed Menu -> Settings -> Auto :meadowrabbit: Not fully capitalistic per your suggestion, but removes the need to micromanage.

If I use auto assign bed, can I have fewer bed than the number of mice? Like 10 beds for 30 mice.

No, auto-assigning only means that you do not have to manually assign them and don't have to do any micro. They will still be kept reserved by Ratizens, but they do that themselves without you needing to do anything. What helps to reduce their number is researching the double beds and using those instead.

Not flooding work spaces with beds can also make the amount rather irrelevant (except for initial cost). There is not much need to keep them super central, since they are only used once per day (or less) and since they stay reserved, there is also no range check mechanic. That does not mean that you should put them at the edge of the map, but e.g. having a 1-3 dormitory floors at the bottom of your city, reachable from your main elevator shaft, should take care of everything.

What Mr Jet is asking for something like shared beds. How difficult it would be to implement would depend on the underlying programming, but the utility of having ratizens who don't own a bed already search out a paid bed service would be nice. They could even limit it to silver and above.

If we're being dead honest, owning a bed in ratopia while incredibly important to efficiency, is not absolutely necessary.

Something like an Inn/Hotel. Satisfies Stamina, Food and Hygiene.

Beds as they are now are supposed to be something a ratizen owns. It would be cool if we can make a law that allows make beds to be a service, and can convert designated beds into rentable, so a ratizen without its own bed can pay to use those beds.

I actually agree with OP. Surely it would be a lot better if rats just occupied the nearest bed to them when they are tired!

Yes. That's it.
I think it's not technically difficult. The need will be met like the need for hygiene or food. The ratizen will go to the nearest free bed (like they go to the nearest free toilet).

I created a discussion thread with a HUGE number of similar ideas. Could you please support? I think you will agree with many of them.

I think high-class beds should be owned by mouse, along with them there should be common beds on which any mouse can rest
