The volcanic biome is only available in maps started after the patch, yes. You might be able to get it from trading.

kinda bad design... many ways to work around such in a way that a map allows for update :/
still great game but someone in planning messed up

They would need to repopulate the map after an update. The thing is that this is still early access, so they probably thought that people were aware that it is not made for playing one game for an infinite time. It is also designed with win conditions.
At least it is not like other games, where you have to completely restart because the save file just isn't working with the new update anymore or something broke some parts of your base ~~
I am not sure what their stance is for this issue and if they maybe plan to handle it differently for future updates. So far nickle, niter and sulfur are the only useful things you can't in old saves. Up to the middle of the new research tree is useable with old saves and only the advanced power generation, Ratrons, drones, explosives and tesla tower is not afaik.

I would honestly think that re-population is something that someone would make a mod for at some point, thought that one itself might break stuff. They might have just not wanted to risk anything for a very temporary issue.

not necesarily a full forward compatibility but rather merchant update, at worst older maps would need to make better deals.

afterall makes no sense why they update available structure & research but not merchants.

Structures and research are not "updated" but just use the new scripts. Merchants and map would need to fire the map generation logic again. They did not retrofit everything that is in the game, e.g. all your old rats will still lose hygiene and joy at the old rate and only newly accepted rats will do so at 1/7 the rate. They did not touch anything in peoples running games. The stuff that is "new" in your game just references the code and works automatically, but the stuff that is missing is generated for your specific game at the start an would need extra work to generate into peoples running games.

indeed which is poorly thought out :/
still i enjoy the game but now the game kinda makes me want to wait until there hasn't been updates for awhile out of fear something new gets added...

another workaround they could have added would be an option upon such update to migrate in which case only the queen migrates but starts anew only with research moving with along with stats.

I understand your frustration, but I'd say this is really the default way to go about these things and have rarely seen it done any other way. Map generation usually happens when you start a game and doing that in a running game is a bit finicky and can mess with things. As said for some games you were even forced to start a new game because the old ones straight up stopped working or some mechanic change made your base/character broken. This is a very temporary issue during early access.

They already said that modding is planed to be a thing not too far into the future, so someone will probably make some hacky way of adding new content into running games. They talked about "modding support" but did not specify, which might mean something along the lines of "devmode" to better develop and test mods, which might also help players to put new resources into their game.

You can find nickle in the volcanic biome. The block is grey-bluish with bright yellow lines.
In the minimap its darker yellow than sulfur. I posted a video in reddit at r/RatopiaSteam.

The problem is that the lower parts of the map weren't empty. There was a placeholder biome there. You could explore and build there. Writing a conversion script just to allow for forward compatibility in older save games during alpha testing isn't really worth the time it would take.

The volcanic layer ends with a "floor" of unbreakable rock, so this might be easier to implement in the future if more layers are added below.
