A rat needs as much food as they can buy and is available. Same with the other items they can equip, and really everything under their requirements tab. If you have a rat with 100 gold, they will only buy 1 grain per day to eat, because they need gold for joy, gold for hygiene buildings like the toilet, and any other level 1 necessity they can afford (such as oil). If your rat has 500g, he will buy more food, he will use the joy buildings multiple times, and same goes for hygiene facilities, they will even buy multiple items from your storage for their enjoyment.
But they need to physically have the wealth to do this. So the answer to your question is 1 grain per day. But thats living paycheck to paycheck. The actual answer is as much as they can afford until they are 100% on the food meter.
People are too worried about holding all the countries gold personally. Thats not how this game works, you as the queen only need enough gold to pay the workers who get a direct wage from the crown, and enough to trade with other nations. I have 70k gold in my kingdom, I'm only holding 20k right now, the rats have 50k between 65 of them.
A single gatherer made to only take grain from the wild can feed 8 rat at least, if there is enouth grain in close to the gathering building.
I dont have the precise number but i think there is a graph with all the precise data of your colonie, in all logics food consumption and production should be in it. (i didn't use it , cose the 13 day demo is quite short so i'm not sure)
But like said above, your rat will eat different food depending on their found and also their "rank" (the leaf symbol of copper, silver and gold)
There is a problem with the AI where the gatherers will do weird stuff and get confused even when i made them beds, a toilet and storage chest near them.
The other problem is that your industry needs gatherers.
In my 60 population city i have 4 grain farms, 2 hunters with 3 butchers, a rabbit farm, a fishery and i will build 1 of each food source or use gatherers because you can't have just 1 or 2 food sources.
But i think the problem is that we don't build enough necesities for the rats, like rail system, blocks all over, the bonuses from food and tools etc.
I will try to build all the bonuses for the mice and see if the gatherers work better again.
I also did a guide at day 51 on hard, i did fail a lot before:)

also theres -30 or +30% hunger speed. so its hard to make a number out of ur population XD they could all be sparta, or all couch potato
My city of 76 has 2 grain fields. 1 hunter. 1 butcher. 1 berry. 1 mushroom and 1 fisherman and thats it. Im at 525 food in storage and growing.
Theres definitely something else wrong with your city.

Let me know if that works. Its the entire save folder for my run, so you should be able to go back and see how it all started, etc. Current save is 85 pop. Its 2 grain fields, 1 hunter, 1 butcher, 1 griller, 1 fisherman, 1 bakery, 1 berry, and 1 mushroom field. Alot of it is having the beds close to the workers, having storage close to the work place, and having joy/hygiene buildings close as well. Then ensuring they have enough money to buy everything they need so they keep working hard.
I don't use gathering posts or the sulv posts past like pop 40ish.
