How do I figure out what ratizens need to advance to the next class?

Inspect any ratizens and see their stats card.

Yea its a bit hidden but lower class rats need oil and something else (cant remember) as basic needs, plus some personal wealth.

You get oil from a grinder by putting flowers through it

you can rightclick on the selected citizen (for example when he works on a station you so you dont have to catch him) and then click on the tab with the money bag and select . its 500 gold and 20 points necessities for a middleclass citizen and 3000 gold and 46 necessity for an upper class citizen. if you want to know what necessities this ratizen lack you can watch in the tab with the smile and select necessities. note you can make higher level necessities available for lower classes via the codestone with the help of tradelaws.

are they consumed after awhile? or permanent?

they are consumed after a while but the effect lasts till the last % with the full effect

You can also click on the necessities meter on the rat and it will show all the necessities, which tier they belong to, and tell you that the more of a certain tier you fulfill the more likely the rat is to promote.

1) What's the benefit of a citizen going to the next class?
2) If you dont have much production of 2nd/first class items and a rat moves to the next class - isnt that a bad thing?
3) If necessities are consumed does that mean one citizen producing one class item isnt enough for all your citizens?

I noticed that even with a school, arena, circus stand releatively close by to each other, few citizens are getting a bonus to all 3....might as well just have a few basic circus stands

1. higher class citizen have a productivity buff even when he is small (+5 % middle +10 % upperclass)
2. you can change the class of a necessity via the codestone but all in all the upgrade to a higher class the only real concern is the money they need to hold(at least this is my opinion) the more necessity items they have the better their performance also it makes them happier.
3 depends how efficent you lineup is. for me for example one printing shop is enough for me to supply nearly all 89 ratizen with books (i changed books at the code stone that even lower classes buy them) it directly near the chest with all the needed materials while oil for example need more than one grinder also due to the need of oil in other production lines.
3,5 instead of a few circus stands at least use music stages they also dont need an item and give more joy and a +1 intelligence (which helps with int jobs and increases exp gain) just change them to all classes use them at the code stone. check that you increase the range of the joy facility should you not spread them out through your base.

tbh. i was thinking of 3 to choose from. the book. shoes and perfume. maybe gum as a side thing?

Thank you for this information and write up! I didnt realise you could change which class has access to what items. Isnt the obvious thing to make all accessories available to all classes to stack bonuses or am i missing something?

I just checked the code stone and cant see where you can change the class of an item? is it because my village is only lvl 4?

Yeah i have multiple schools/arenas/circus stands overlapping yet many rats are only getting one joy type satisfied

My village is lvl 4 and i noticed a locked slot on my character next to the equipment/stats slots. Do you know what this is?

it makes sense to make necessities available to all but you can also only make a limited number of laws so you have to choose.
to make something available to all, city level has nothing to do with it you only need a codestone and the items researched or in case of structures physically build. you use the codestone go into commercial law start a new one and click on type.
now pick ressource consumability for making necessities available while structure usability is for structures like the musicstage or pub.
under afffected item for ressources or structure for structures you now pick the thing you want available for all (note for structures you first have to actually build the structure so it will show up in the list of structures). finally you set in classes a checkmark for every class. you can also make them stop eat or consume stuff this way i normally do that with oil raw meat or grain in some situations.
about the joytypes not spreading i cant help with that im sry i have no idea how to do that i tend to favor pubs for the lategame. i hope this explanation will help you a little none the less.

i was thinking of comboing music and pubs tbh. but i think about it a pub would be optimal. just need to thnik of what would be optimal nessisitys or hygene items. i use mainly perfume books shoes gum and packs.

i myself heavily value gum books bat potion and pottery (and these noscolin potions so you dont have to rescue your hunters) with bread as main food. for hygene i normally go for normal toilets and the washery since all these options give a buff on lowering the need for some basic need. while toilets maybe ♥♥♥♥ but they dont need someone to operate them.

i use noscolin potions too. forgot to mention that. bat potions? curious on that one didnt look at em not that i can FIND ANY BATS.. i use pretty much all sorts of food. berrys bread and meat. (i actually been getting a surplus of food dramatically.. so i sell it to buy other things. i use the bath and toilets. operation free for both. and i might switch to all pubs. to reduce the usage of the law counts..

the the bathhouse is awesome how could i have forgot that. food wise i have the same surplus but bread gives lots of money aswell as gold jewelry (forgot the right name)
