I've heard you can create farming plots and you can use the seeds gathered to plant new crops. However it takes mud and I have yet to find any mud as it seems it can't be crafted/produced anywhere

You have to research and build a plant plot. It is a ♥♥♥♥♥ to get 4 muds for it so it is better to not remove the nearby wild grass you have and put someone on the gathering post to keep gathering it. As for tree, same deal, however, you always spawn with a giant tree on either your left or right and that will give you a lot of woods so don't worry about it.

Grass field can grow 30 grasses. You need to feed it a dirt, and water on that work mode. Otherwise, you can put a Silviculture post down. It increase the growth rate of wild plant by 50%.
